"A Boy's Best Friend" is the seventh episode of the sixth season of The Dukes Of Hazzard.

Summary

Terry Lee (Danny Cooksey) is a six-year-old orphan who has become withdrawn since he recently lost his parents in a car crash, and Ira Grant (Wally Taylor), the caretaker at the orphanage, is worried about him. Bo and Luke help Terry Lee by getting him a basset hound from the pound. It turns out to be Maxine, the valuable purebred showdog that was kidnapped from wealthy John J. Hooper (Joe Dorsey) at a dog show, and the kidnappers, a man named B. B. (Billy Ray Sharkey) and his wife Mandy Jo (Jennifer Holmes), have demanded a $25,000 ransom. B. B. had worked for John for eight years, and then John fired him. Maxine escaped and ended up in the pound when B. B. and Mandy Jo came to Hazzard. John and his wife (Toni Sawyer) have posted a $10,000 reward for the return of Maxine. Boss Hogg, who wants the reward, learns that Maxine is at the orphanage and, ignorant of Terry Lee's feelings, Boss Hogg takes her and holds her until John can arrive.

B. B. and Mandy Jo mistake Rosco's dog Flash for Maxine -- they take her while Rosco gets some water for his car's radiator, which became overheated while chasing the Duke boys -- and as a result of that mistake, they kidnap Flash. As a result of Flash being dog-napped, Rosco is an emotional wreck and relies on the Duke boys to rescue his dog -- he tearfully tells Bo and Luke that Flash's birthday was coming up and that he hoped to present her with a jumbo-sized bag of "doggie num-nums," her favorite treat -- all while having to deal with Boss' lack of empathy and focus on the reward.

While everyone is looking for Flash, Boss is still hoping to collect the reward for Maxine. After everything is sorted out, B. B. and Mandy Jo are found, Flash is rescued, and the Hoopers decide to adopt Terry Lee.

Plot

Balladeer: If anybody else went to town to pick up parts for the tractor, well it wouldn’t rattle nobody’s chain. But these are the Dukes, this is Hazzard, and that means trouble. Now this fella B.B. is trying to look innocent, because he and his lovely wife just kidnapped a valuable basset show dog named Maxine. Which in Dixie is like sneaking off with the crown jewels.

Road

Bo and Luke drive toward town. In his patrol car, Rosco informs Flash that Saturday is her birthday. He says that as soon as he gets a few more citations he’ll have the money to get her a big birthday present. Meanwhile a van drives by and Rosco chases after it. The driver, B.B., is worried but the passenger, Mindy Jo assures him that no one can know what they did yet so just pull over.  While Rosco gives the couple a ticket, the dog gets out of the back and wanders off. Rosco finishes up and leaves. B.B. offers to check on the dog but Mandy Jo says they’ll do it later as she wants to get out of Hazzard first. The two drive away. A few moments later Maxine comes out of the woods, whimpering at being left alone.

B.B. asks if John J. Hooper will actually pay 25 thousand for the dog. Mandy Jo says he worked for Hooper for eight years before he was fired and he knows just how much the Hooper's think of that dog, which he agrees.

Bo and Luke continue driving when Luke spots Doctor Appleby on the side of the road. The boys stop and ask if the Doctor needs help. He explains he’s on an emergency call to the orphanage and the boys agree to take him. Bo calls Cooter to get the car while also taking Appleby to the orphanage.

Hazzard County Orphanage

Ira Grant tries to bring out lunch for Terry Lee, who is sitting on the porch. All the other kids were at ‘Camp Hogg’ for the week leaving just Ira and Terry Lee. When the boys arrive, Doc Appleby goes over to check on Terry Lee and Ira explains to Bo and Luke that the boy had recently lost both of his parents and hasn’t spoken or eaten since. Appleby tells them he can’t help the boy and it will take a small miracle. As Bo watches Terry Lee, he comments that it kind of takes them back and Luke says he can’t remember that sad. Bo says they were very young when their folks passed on and Luke says he had Bo and Daisy. Bo adds they all had Uncle Jesse. They reluctantly leave.

Road

Having exited Hazzard, Mandy Jo and B.B. decide to stop and feed Maxine. When they go into the back they find the dog is gone. Mandy Jo says the dog got out the busted door. B.B. asks what now and she asks if she has to tell him everything before saying they go find the dog. The two head back to Hazzard.

Bo and Luke meanwhile keep thinking about Terry Lee and as they go through the idea, Luke asks Bo what needs a lot of love but asks for nothing in return. Bo suggest Cindy Mae Moffet, saying a man’s best friend. Luke gets annoyed saying he is talking about a little boy and that they need a dog. Bo agrees and suggests they go to the pound.

Hazzard County Dog Pound

Mr. Winkle gets a call from Boss, who is in his office at the Police Department saying the pound hasn’t produced a single dime in the past six months. Winkle protests that he is two months shy of retiring and says he has a dog that was just brought in. Boss tells him to sell the dog or he will shut down the pound and fire Mr. Winkle. Mr. Winkle tells the dog he may have to lie.

Police Department

Boss hands up on Mr. Winkle and Rosco says ‘you were a little hard on Twinkle’. Boss corrects the name before saying he was motivating him.

Hazzard County Dog Pound

Bo and Luke arrive at the pound and Mr. Winkle greets them. Bo notices the dog and says she looks like Flash, to which Luke says all basset hounds look like Flash. They explain they are looking for a dog and Mr. Winkle informs them that the dog he has was in his possession for the last ten days. The boys agree to take her and Luke says the sign asks for ten dollars. Bo pulls out eight and Luke pulls out five. Bo hands over five and Luke gives all ten to Mr. Winkle. They leave with the dog. Bo remarks that she looks like Flash but she has a few dark marks behind her ears. They head back to the orphanage.

Road

B.B. and Mandy Lou look at the side of the road and hope that someone found her and took her to the pound.

Orphanage

Appleby and Ira are surprised to see Bo and Luke return. Appleby goes over to them, asking what brings them back. Bo shows him the dog and the Doc says for them to try as they tried everything else. They ask if the Doc wants to give the dog to the boy, but he says the boys should. They all go to the porch, Ira and Appleby watching as Bo and Luke introduce themselves to Terry Lee and present the dog. Terry Lee asks if he can keep the dog, making all four men relieved and happy. Bo promises him that he will keep the dog and the boys offer to have Jesse come out and build a dog house and Daisy bring a blanket and dog food. Appleby thanks them and the boys say they are going to go get a dog license to finalize it all.

Road

Bo and Luke head to town, glad that they were able to help. They hear sirens and see Rosco is chasing them. Bo tells him goodbye before jumping a gully. Rosco follows and continues the chase. He radios them and says the license plate is crooked and they have a 25 fine or 25 hours in jail. The boys laugh and Luke says they’ll see him in town. Rosco runs through a fence however and his radiator blows. He opens the hood to check it before leaving to find water to cool it down. He tells Flash to stay with the car.

Mandy Jo and B.B. drive by and spot Flash. Assuming it is Maxine, they stop and grab Flash. Meanwhile Bo and Luke notice Rosco isn’t chasing them and decide to go back to make sure he’s okay. Rosco returns to his car, just in time to see the van making off with Flash. Rosco is frantic. Meanwhile Bo and Luke come from the other way, seeing the van that is taking up both sides of the road and are forced around it. They arrive to see Rosco and are concerned. Rosco tells them that the people in the van took his dog and the boys help him into the General, promising to help him. They chase after the van.

Bo asks why they would do that and Rosco says that it was to get back at him for giving them a ticket. Luke notices Rosco got a bump on his head and they reach an intersection to see they lost the truck. The boys apologize to Rosco, offering to take him to the court house and trying to assure him they will find her. Rosco tells them that Flash is the only thing he ever loved outside of Mama and Lulu, and Boss at Christmas time. He adds that Saturday is her birthday and he has her present picked out. Rosco starts to cry and Bo promises they will get her back.

Boss is confused and not very concerned and Enos tells him he just learned Mr. John J. Hooper’s dog Maxine was taken from a dog show in Chickasaw County and there is a ten thousand dollar reward. Boss takes the paper but Enos is worried people are kidnapping basset hounds. Boss rushes to his office, having Gussie connect him to Mr. Winkle. He tells Winkle to hold the basset hound he found, not letting Winkle explain that he already sold the dog.

Orphanage

They are stunned to hear the reward but hearing that the dog had dark marks they become concerned that is the dog they just bought. He says to get the dog and get it back there and then they will sort it all out later. The boys agree.

Boss says he’s not sharing the reward and Luke says they aren’t interested in it and explains about the boy at the orphanage. Boss says he’s sorry about that, but the dog has a rightful owner and that owner is on his way to Hazzard. He leaves the boys and Bo says it was a waste of time. Luke suggests they go to Route 11 and cut off the owner of the dog so they can make an offer to buy the dog. Bo, in disbelief, asks what Luke wants to buy it with since they already spent ten dollars but Luke says he’ll think of something. They head out to find Mr. Hooper.

Bo says there is a lot they should have known. They see a car coming with Hooper on the side and they stop the car. They apologize for stopping them and quickly explain the situation to the couple. The boys offer everything they own as a down-payment on the dog. John is not amused by the offer. John says that the dog isn’t for sale and they don’t even know it’s their dog. John asks if they can tell him where to find Boss and Luke says they will actually show them. The couple follow the General Lee to town.
