"A Little Game of Pool" is the eleventh episode of the fifth season of The Dukes Of Hazzard.

Summary[]

The 37th annual Tri-Counties Amateur Pool Championship at the Boar's Nest is coming up, and Jesse is one of the competitors. Boss Hogg is trying to get his hands on the General Lee so he can sell it to Joe Landis (Frank Pendle) and Don Purcell (Jesse D. Goins), a pair of hijackers who need a good getaway car. Landis and Purcell have put together a list of every payroll shipment in the state, and Boss Hogg's plan is for Landis and Purcell to hijack the shipments, and split them with Boss Hogg. When Landis and Purcell try to steal the General Lee, they are stopped by the Dukes, so Boss Hogg challenges Jesse to a game of pool -- Ridge Runner style -- and he tricks Jesse into wagering the General Lee. Jesse is a better pool player than Boss is, but Boss still has some dirty tricks up his sleeve, such as naming Chickasaw Thins (Robert V. Barron) as Jesse's opponent, because no one has ever beaten Chickasaw Thins. Jesse loses the General in the game, and now the Dukes have to find the General and get it back from Landis and Purcell, who have painted the General Lee black.

Plot[]

Balladeer: As y’all might already know, the General Lee has hisself quite a reputation for character, speed, and right smart agility. Fact, when General Lee goes through Hazzard most folks sit up and take notice. But Hazzard folks ain’t the only ones to take notice.

Road

Coy and Vance are playing around in the General and Coy jumps for fun. Joe and Don watch the General from a hill and Don clocks the car with a radar gun. Joe, impressed, calls Boss on a radio to say they just witnessed the car go from 25 to 55 in 2 ½ seconds.

Police Department

Boss sits in his office, eating a massive bowl of jell-o and informing the two men that with the General Lee, no cop would ever catch them. Boss says that adding that with the contents of their ‘little black book’ they have the keys to the kingdom of pay roles. The two men plan to steal the General.

Road

Coy and Vance drive past Rosco who chases after them. They pass a small black box that Rosco set up to lower a railroad crossing gate. As they go under it, Coy wonders why it’s there if there is no railroad anywhere around. Hearing the siren and watching Rosco drive through the crossing arm, Vance tells him to ask Rosco. Rosco calls the boys on the C.B., telling them to pull over but Vance answers back to tell him to arrest himself for breaking the sign. Rosco takes a moment to assure Flash that they will teach the boys about sassing him before calling Enos.

Enos is sitting in his car and responds to Rosco, who tells him to cut the boys off. After a moment of banter, Enos rushes to obey. Down the road, Coy cuts down another road and jumps over Enos. In surprise, Enos looks back at the boys and runs Rosco off the road. They crash through a fence into a bull enclosure. The bull proceeds to chase them around and Vance and Coy watch, amused as the tow stand on top of the cars. Vance says that the farm belongs to Mr. Pruitt and they should inform him about the police being there.

Police Department

Rosco and Flash arrive at Boss’ office, who has finished half his bowl. Boss tells Rosco that two men put together a little black book with every payroll shipment in the state. He says all he has to do to get a cut is to supply them with the fastest vehicle in the south. When Rosco finishes the thought, Boss says he’s ahead of him. Rosco inquires about how much he will get and Boss talks around it.

Balladeer: One of the cultural highs in Hazzard, is the Annual Pool Championship at the Boar’s Nest. And lots of folks, Jesse Duke among ‘em, take shooting pool as seriously as country driving, country music, and country cooking.

Duke Farm

Jesse, Daisy, Vance, and Coy are in the barn, using a pool table that is set up. A sign about the 37th Annual pool championship is hanging in the barn, showing the date is set for Saturday. Daisy breaks as the others watch and none of the balls go in. Daisy remarks she didn’t leave Jesse any good shots but he disagrees. He tells the kids to watch as he tells them a shot he will make before making it successfully. The kids all watch in amusement and Jesse tells them to say out of his way as he makes another shot.

Outside Joe and Don approach the General and steals it while the Jesse continues to clean off the table, Coy saying it would be easier if they just mailed him the trophy. Hearing the General though the Dukes run out of the barn and the kids get in Dixie while Jesse goes to call Rosco. Coy drives and says it must be the guys who have been following them all week. Vance wonders how they planned to get away with it.

Police Department

Enos practices hitting the cue ball into a coffee cup on his desk when the phone rings. In surprise he falls over, hitting the ball too hard and breaking the cup. Enos runs over and answers the phone to learn the General was stollen. He calls Rosco on the C.B. to inform him of what happened, saying the crooks are going south on Willow Road. Enos goes to chase after them, missing Rosco’s call to sit tight. In his hurry to get to the car, Enos nearly collides with two women named Marnie and Sarah before taking off again.

As Enos drives around the town square he hits a latter out from under a worker who was changing a light. It knocks off the antenna for the radio, which the worker tries to tell him but Enos keeps driving.

Willow Road

Joe and Don continue to run from the boys and Daisy. They notice the road is out ahead and Joe decides to jump over it. Dixie is unable to follow and Coy is forced to go around. Meanwhile Rosco catches up to the General and pulls them over. While Rosco tries to figure out what they are doing, the Dukes arrive and demand to know if Rosco will arrest the men. Upset, Rosco agrees to arrest them and takes them away. Meanwhile the boys reclaim the General and Daisy leaves in Dixie.

Police Department

The boys follow Rosco back to the Police Department and praise Rosco on the arrest, saying they underestimated him. Boss gets mad at him, scolding Rosco for going to shake their hands and chase the boys out. They bring up the pool tournament and Boss snaps that he’s tired of being second best so he’s been practicing all year long so he can beat Jesse. Amused the boys leave.

Upstairs Vance notices a booking sheet and are unamused to the phony names. Vance is suspicious and they leave, heading back to the farm. Enos sees them leaving and assumes it was the people who stole the General. He chases after the boys and knocks down the workers ladder again. The worker yells after him that he’s running out of Hazzard. Coy tries to contact Enos to see why he’s chasing them but Enos doesn’t answer. They wonder what he can be upset about and they figure if they get him back to the farm they can calm him down.

Boss talks to the two crooks, who are angry about what happened. Boss says Rosco will get the car, confusing Rosco and Boss assures him he’ll tell him later.

Road

The boys continue to run from Enos, passing some road work. A crane brakes and drops a phone pole across the road. The boys stop but Enos doesn’t and jumps over the pole and into a pond. After making sure Enos was fine and swimming back to shore, they head home.

Duke Farm

Rosco and Boss arrive at the farm to see the Duke’s playing poll in the barn. Boss makes a shot, succeeding and celebrating but Jesse asks what they want. Daisy says they are in the middle of a game and Boss apologizes for interrupting. He says the tournament is one of the two most important goals of his life right now and when Jesse asks what the other is, Rosco says ‘probably foreclosing on the mortgage on the poorhouse’. Boss gets annoyed and tells them that it’s owning the car that can win the Charlotte 500. He says that the only one that can is the General Lee and he is offering 1500 for the car. The Duke’s laugh at him and Boss offers 2500, saying that’s finale. The Duke’s tell him to forget it as the car is a member of the family. Boss says he’ll forget about it and decides to make another shot on the table, tearing up the fabric to the Duke’s anger. They leave, Jesse yelling at him for it. Boss offers to pay for the table after the tournament to which Jesse yells that he said the same thing in 1938 at the Hazzard County Amateur. While the others vent Vance points out he’s concerned that attempts on the General are connected.

Road

As Rosco drives them back to town, he commends Boss on ripping the table. Boss says with it out of commission Jesse can only practice at the Boar’s Nest where Boss can ‘snooker’ him.

Police Department

Vance and Coy arrive at the police department, having asked Cooter to fish Enos out for them. Inside Enos helps look through the records for them, noticing that Rosco never took the men’s fingerprints. When Vance and Coy ask if he can take the men’s fingerprints off the drinking glasses, Enos agrees saying he learned about that while on the California Metro Squad. He asks the boys why and Coy says they just want to know who they are. When the boys suggest Boss may be tied in, Enos doubts it but agrees to get the prints anyway. The boys say they’ll be back for it when they finish helping Jesse practice.

Boar’s Nest

Jesse comes into the bar to see the Dukes playing pool. Boss says they have some gull, but Vance points out the sign saying everyone is welcome to practice for the tournament. Boss challenges Jesse to a game ‘for old times sake’ and Jesse says he could use a warm up. Boss says for house stakes with ridge runner rules to which Jesse agrees and they spit and shake. Boss declares that the challenger gets to pick the stakes and bets his convertible against General Lee. The Dukes become annoyed and surprised. Jesse says he can’t bet it as the General Lee isn’t his. Boss challenges Jesse’s word and the kids all agree to the bet. Boss tells them that the game will begin at this time tomorrow. The Dukes play again.

Road

Vance is concerned as he and Coy head back to Enos, wondering what Boss wants. Rosco pulls him behind them, saying he’s going to arrest Vance. Vance asks what is it this time and Rosco denies giving them one. Coy speeds off, taking a high road over a truck hauling hay. Coy jumps down to the lower road, going over the truck. Rosco attempts to follow but falls short, landing on the trailer of the truck. After he realized what happened Rosco tries to contact the driver to stop. When he fails to do so, he decides to drive off the back.

Police Department

Enos shows them the prints from the glass and tells the boys they have a ‘facsimile machine’ in the back. He says they’ll go straight to the FBI in Washington and if these men have a record, they’ll find it. The boys are happy but Enos says the machine is broken and they have to wait until tomorrow.

Duke Farm

The next morning Jesse prepares to leave for the Boar’s Nest. The boys are changing brakes on the pickup and he asks how long the boys will take. They say it’ll take another half hour and for Jesse to just take the General. The boys remark the whole family is worried about what Boss is planning.

Police Department

The boys go to see Enos, and Enos apologizes saying the machine is still down. He says that it will take another day to get the machine up. He also informs them that the two men were just bailed out by Boss Hogg. Upset Coy concludes they are all tied together. Vance asks where the nearest machine is. Enos says Capital City. Vance concludes that Enos’ car is faster and announces Enos is going to take them, to Enos surprise. They drag Enos out, barley having enough time to grab the prints. As they get in the car and leave town, the worker sees Enos and flees with the ladder.

Road

Boss meets with Joe and Don, putting a load of paint in their car. Boss says they will bring the General Lee and when asked what color, Rosco says to paint it lavender. Annoyed Boss tells them they’ll paint it black and then each job after will be another color. Rosco keeps insisting on lavender and Boss orders the men to paint it lavender for the second job.

Capitol City Sheriff’s Office

Enos comes out of the Sheriff’s office, showing Vance and Coy wanted posters. Vance and Coy realize that is why everyone wants the General. The want to head back but Enos lets them know the antenna is busted. They know they need to call the Boar’s Nest.

Boar’s Nest

Daisy and Jesse are wondering where the boys are as they are two hours late.

Road

The boys find the phone is down from the phone pole the day before and decide to have Coy drive them back to the Boar’s Nest. Vance is worried at how close they are to game time.

Boar’s Nest

Rosco enters the Boar’s Nest and announces the game is about to start. He appoints Daisy to hold the keys to the convertible and Rosco holds the General’s keys. Boss comes out of his office to show a bruised face and a broken arm. He says he had an accident and announces he is allowed to have a person fill in for him. Mr. Chickasaw Thins comes in and everyone groans as they realize what Boss has done. Jesse informs Daisy that the man is a professional pool hustler and Daisy becomes furious. Jesse refuses to back out and Boss declares the game started.

Jesse breaks and is solids. He takes another shot, hitting another ball in. As the game continues Jesse misses a shot and Thins remarks that is too bad since it was the last shot he would get. Thins continues to clean off the table as the boys continue to head toward them. On the last shot Jesse gets impatient but Thins still makes the shot in, winning the game to everyone but Boss’ disappointment. Daisy tosses Boss’ keys back to him and Rosco goes outside to get the Genera. Jesse says he has to put a stop to this and chases after Rosco, but Rosco leaves with the General Lee. Daisy says the General is gone and Jesse says it’s all his fault. Daisy tries to assure him that it isn’t true. Daisy says the boys can live with it but Jesse says he doesn’t know if he can. The two go back inside.

Road

Rosco heads toward the others when he sees a man fixing an RV tire in the middle of the road. Rosco tries to jump over it but clips the RV, destroying it.

Boar’s Nest

Enos and the boys arrive. Boss approaches Jesse in the Boar’s Nest and comments that he figured Jesse would be gone. Jesse says he can’t as he doesn’t have a car and has to wait for Daisy to get off. The boys all come in, assuming Jesse has won but Boss announces it was him who won. Jesse confirms it, explaining that Chickasaw Thins was the one to play and Jesse never beat him. Vance says they stand behind him before demanding to know why Boss let the men out. Enos and the boys inform him that the crooks were wanted men and accuses Boss of working with them. Boss gets angry at the accusations and tells them he is going to set things straight. In his anger he bangs his ‘broken’ arm against the table, revealing to everyone present that there is nothing wrong with him and the game is void. The Dukes get excited realizing the General still belongs to them and Enos goes with the boys to reclaim what is now their stolen car. Boss chases after them, furious. When they ignore him, he gets in Rosco’s car.

Road

Enos asks if they will let him drive as Rosco will have a fit, but Coy says if they don’t catch Rosco they will have one. They see a man on the side of the road and he gives them directions to where he saw Rosco go in the General. Boss continues to chase after the boys, taking out a number of mailboxes as he does.

Rosco oversees the General being repainted black. Rosco starts celebrating but Don points out the arrival of Enos’ car. Rosco becomes alarmed and the two men leave to drive off in their car. Coy stops so he and Vance can get their car and Enos gets Rosco, who says the whole thing is Enos fault. The boys leave as Boss arrives, who serves to avoid the boys and hits Enos’ car. Rosco asks what Boss is doing there, and Boss says he’s there to save their bacon. Enos asks what about him and Boss says to follow in his car.

The boys follow Joe and Don in their brown car and Vance, who is driving, assures Coy that they will catch the two on a straight part of the road. Rosco and Boss continue to follow and Boss says they need to keep the crooks from talking to the Dukes.

Joe gives Don a gun, and Don starts shooting at the General, hitting the windshield. The crooks go one way at a fork and Vance goes the other. Once he confirms Boss and Rosco are far enough back, Vance pulls into some bushes to let them drive by. Coy asks what they are doing and Vance says the road comes together up ahead and they should just let Boss and Rosco catch them this time.

The road comes together at a section where there are men working. The two cars hit it at the same time, flipping them. Rosco arrests the two men and Enos takes them to the prison to lock them up.

Balladeer: Naturally the bad dudes sung like stoolies. But, since they couldn’t prove Rosco and Boss was their partners they got off, except for one little detail. After winning the Annual Tri-County’s Amateur Pool Championship, Jesse made Boss and Rosco paint General Lee back to its original color in exchange for not pressing charges against Boss for violating Ridge Runner rules. Except they had to send off for more paint to finish the General and it turned out a bright orange red letter day in Hazzard.

Boar’s Nest

Jesse plays Mr. Adams in pool and wins using the same trick that Mr. Thins used on him. He wins the championship.

Boss and Rosco are forced to repaint the General Lee. Boss and Rosco run into each other and get angry, painting each other orange.
