"Brotherly Love" is the fourth episode of the sixth season of The Dukes Of Hazzard.

Summary[]

Luke reunites with his long-lost brother, a boxer named Jed. Jed's got a secret to hide: He's trying to flee a professional gambler who had lost his entire fortune in Jed's fight that was supposed to be fixed. Now, the gambler wants to kill Jed in revenge.

Plot[]

Balladeer: Now it’s pretty dang seldom in Hazzard that you see one car chasing another without one of them being the General Lee and the other being the Sheriff patrol car. And it ain’t often you’ll see someone tool around a set of wheels almost as good as Bo and Luke Duke. What y’all reckon is goin’ on? There’s an awful lot good reason for the similarity, which if you’ll hang on a minute you’ll see.

A man with glasses drives a brown car, trying to escape from the car behind him. They approach a construction site and the man in the front goes through it, jumping the car. The other car refuses to follow.

Duke Farm

Jesse and Luke look at a pie in the oven and Jesse says it needs about five minutes more, which Luke agrees as Jesse is the expert. A knock comes at the door and Jesse walks past Daisy and Bo, who are working at the table, to answer the door. The man with the glasses greets Jesse, introducing himself as Jud, Luke’s little brother. The Dukes are all baffled by this and Luke invites the man in before telling him that this isn’t funny and his little brother died in a hospital fire when he was two weeks old. Jud explains that one of the nurses had saved him, which Jesse points out they never did find any remains. Luke asks if that is true why didn’t he come looking before. Jud says he didn’t know any of the Dukes existed until six months ago when his mother died, she told him everything on her deathbed. Luke asks how Jud expects them to believe this story and Jud says he has proof and if Daisy would turn around he could show Luke a birthmark that they both have in the same place. Luke takes this as confirmation and happily hugs his brother before introducing Daisy and Bo. As the Dukes’ greet Jud, Daisy hugs Luke in congratulations for finding his brother and Luke steps away, happy but trying to digest what happened.

Train Depot

Charlie, the other driver, calls his employer Tex and informs him that he lost Jud but he is sure Jud is still in Hazzard. Tex tells him to find Jud, because he lost everything on Jud when Jud didn’t take a dive like he wanted him to. Charlie tells him to catch the next bus to Hazzard.

Duke Farm

Jud praises Daisy’s cooking and Daisy says they still have the apple pies to which the boys all cheer. Daisy asks if they want milk or buttermilk and Bo asks for buttermilk. Both Jud and Luke comment that they don’t like that and want black coffee to everyone’s amusement. Jesse tells him to finish telling them and Jud explains he was a boxer in the Army. Bo gets excited telling him that Luke was a boxer in the marines to which Luke says he got out. Jud says that he stayed with it and became a pro boxer. Bo asks why he quit and Jud says it’s a long story. Bo goes to ask more but Jesse closes the conversation, giving a toast to Jud. Bo calls for a speech and Jud gestures to Jesse first but Jesse redirects it to them and Jud says this is the happiest day of his life.

Road

Charlie continues to look for Jud.

Duke Farm

Jud looks out the window as Bo, Daisy, and Jesse do the dishes. Luke notices and goes over to him, asking if there is something interesting out there. Luke pushes since Jud keeps looking out the window and Jud admits there is someone trying to kill him. Luke asks that doesn’t he think everyone should know about this and Jud says no. Luke calls the others in, saying Jud has a problem. The other Dukes express confusion, but obey and Jud explains about how he was supposed to take a dive but refused and now the gambler who lost everything on him is hunting him. Jesse says they need to go to the police and when Jud says they have guns, Daisy agrees. Jesse tells then that if Rosco isn’t at the court house they can find him at speed trap number two.

Police Department

Boss prepares for the Hazzard Moon Ball by having Rosco teach him how to dance. Rosco ends up taking Boss’ rose before dipping Boss as the Dukes come in. Bo comments they might not be the prettiest couple at the ball but they count good. Boss tells them to count thirty days as that is what they will get for trespassing. Rosco dances back into the room and Bo turns off the music saying Boss can’t get them for trespassing in a public building. Rosco asks what legitimate business and Bo says they are trying to save a man’s life. Rosco asks Bo which man and Luke introduces his brother, startling and confusing the two. Boss asks where he came from as he never heard about him before. Bo goes to explain the story but Luke cuts him off saying they don’t have the time. Jud says the man after him is named Charlie Burns and Rosco asks for a description before writing it down as Jud gives it. Boss stops it all before asking why should Rosco bother. Bo gets annoyed snapping that Rosco is the law and it’s his duty, which Luke indicates Bo should settle down. Luke indicates there might be a reward in it, which makes Boss and Rosco do a sudden turn around, agreeing to help.

After the boys leave, Rosco says they were lying. Rosco says if that man was Luke Duke’s brother than he’s a second cousin to a jackass. Boss says the man is Luke’s brother and Rosco is because Duke’s don’t lie. Rosco agrees. Boss also admits that someone is after Luke’s brother but Boss says he thinks that Jud might be on the run from the law and that the man after Jud might be a bounty hunter.

Road

Bo notices Charlie Burns behind him and asks Jud and Luke what car Jud said was following him. When Jud describes the car behind him, Bo informs them they have company. They notice the man is just hanging back so Bo takes off. Charlie continues to follow and Jud says it’s definitely Charlie. Bo remarks he hopes they don’t mind if he pulls over and ask. However Luke notes that Charlie is gaining on Bo and Bo informs them of engine trouble, begging Luke to tell him that it isn’t the float valve again. Charlie catches up and starts ramming the General. Luke tells Bo that he gets the feeling the man isn’t friendly.  Charlie pulls out a gun and Bo rams him into a ditch. Luke says that it won’t take the man long to find who the car belongs to and Jud says it will lead him right to the farm.

Police Department

Boss, Rosco, and Enos go through a number of wanted posters. Enos asks who they are looking for and Rosco says Luke’s kid brother. Enos says he didn’t know Luke had a brother and asks when did he get one. Rosco says he’s had one for some 20-odd years. Enos admits he doesn’t know what Luke’s brother looks like and they tell him to look for someone like Luke.

Town of Hazzard

Charlie picks up Tex, who is still angry at him for losing Jud. Tex decides to ask the police about who owns the General Lee.

Duke Farm

Luke is upset that Jud is going to just pack up and leave. Jud says it’s being smart but Luke stops him saying he can’t just drop into peoples lives one minute and drop out the next. The Dukes all insist they want to help and Jud says that if anything happened to them he couldn’t live with himself. Luke asks if it would be easier for him if something happened to Jud and Bo tells them that he’s currently having trouble living with both of them, which makes Daisy laugh. Bo reminds them all that the guy is going to find them easily because of the General. Luke points out Charlie don’t know the area well so he’ll have to use the main road. Luke says he’ll drive Jud’s car and Jud will ride with Bo in the General Lee. Jud asks what good will that do and Jesse says for him to stay out of it. Bo says Luke is going to be a decoy while he gets Jud out of town. Bo says they can go to McCall’s place, which Luke agrees. Daisy goes to make them food and Jesse goes to get them some money, all four ignoring Jud’s protests the entire time. The boys go to pack.

Police Department

Rosco, Boss, and Enos find nothing. Enos proposes no one wants him. Rosco suggests that maybe Jud hasn’t done anything wrong to which Boss reminds them that he’s a Duke. Enos says the Duke Family is an honest law abiding family and Boss says that is why he doesn’t trust them. People who are so clean had to be dirty at some time. Boss sends Enos to stake out the Duke Farm. Boss then tells Rosco to start calling every law enforcement agency that he can because if they don’t find something they will be stuck with another Duke.

As Enos leaves, he passes Tex and Charlie. Enos pauses, trying to recall where he’s seen them before. Tex and Charlie go inside, hearing Boss and Rosco talk about looking for anything on Jud. The two men become very interesting, implying to Boss and Rosco that Jud is a wanted murderer called ‘Killer Kane’. The two inform Tex and Charlie that Jud is at the Duke Farm and they lock Boss and Rosco in a cell before leaving.

Duke Farm

The Dukes leave the Farm, Luke in Jud’s car and Bo and Jud in the General. Daisy is frustrated that they forgot the sandwiches and Jesse says they’ll have to eat them now. Enos watches them leave, concluding he needs to stay with the brother.

Police Department

Boss reaches for the keys from the cell but is unable to reach them. He gets stuck through the bars and Rosco says it was from eating so much on Sunday at the picnic.

Road

Bo and Jud go in one direction, Bo checking in with Luke on the CB. Bo asks Luke to keep him informed on what happens.

Police Department

Boss has Rosco reach for the keys, saying they need to keep the others from getting the reward. Boss tries to press Rosco against the bars but Rosco can’t reach them. Boss finds a mop in the cell and tells Rosco to use that. Rosco asks why didn’t he think of that and Boss says if Rosco had brains than he would be the Boss and Boss would be the jackass sheriff.

Road

Luke continues to drive down the road while Charlie and Tex come from the other direction. Charlie spots the car and the two assume it’s Jud. Luke radios Bo to tell him he’s been spotted. Luke goes onto Old Mill Road. Luke and Tex both have to avoid a truck and Charlie begins shooting. Bo radio’s Luke to tell him to let Tex and Charlie know they have the wrong car but Luke reveals that they are shooting at him now. Alarmed, Bo and Jud decide to abandon the plan and go back for Luke, especially when Luke stops talking to them.

Up ahead Enos passes the General, seeing Bo and Jud before turning to follow them. Jud asks if that was the Sheriff but Bo says it was Enos’ car before calling Enos and telling him that Luke is in trouble. Enos tells Bo that he’s with him and Bo thanks him before trying to get Luke again. Luke hears Bo, but can’t answer especially after losing a tire. Luke loses control of the car and bails out as it crashes but he hits his head and is knocked unconscious.

Bo and Jud spot smoke and head to it only to find Jud’s car destroyed. Tex and Charlie assume that Jud is dead and head out to a bar. Bo and Jud arrive and are terrified when they see the car but quickly find Luke. They run down to him as Enos arrives and Bo yells for Enos to call an ambulance, which Enos does. They try to get Luke to wake up and as Jud gets upset Bo insists it isn’t his fault.

Boar’s Nest

Enos arrives at the Boar’s Nest, where Daisy is serving Tex and Charlie. Enos approaches Daisy and tells her about the accident and how Luke is in the hospital, having crashed Jud’s car. Tex and Charlie hear the whole thing. Daisy tells Enos to call Uncle Jesse before dashing out of the bar. Tex and Charlie decide to head to the hospital to get Jud. They go out, saying goodbye to Enos who is on the phone with Jesse. Enos wonders again just where he knows them from. Enos goes outside to watch them leave, seeing the California plates.

Tri-County Hospital

Jesse, Bo, Daisy, and Jud wait in the hospital for any news on Luke, Daisy hugging Bo in worry. Jud again says it’s his fault and that it should be him in the hospital bed. Bo becomes angry at the statement, asking if Jud thinks they would feel better if that happened. Jesse calms Bo down and the doctor comes out. The nurse informs them that Luke has not internal injuries or broken bones. Bo asks that Luke is going to be alright and she says they need him to wake up. Daisy suggests they talk to Luke and the nurse says one at a time. Jesse goes first.

Road

While driving, Enos talks out what he knows out loud, recalling Tex Tompkins who was wanted for extortion and gambling. He celebrates recalling it.

Tri-County Hospital

Jesse sits by Luke’s bed, trying to call out to him. Luke doesn’t react and Jesse says if Luke can hear him to please make some sign.

Police Department

Rosco continues to try and get the keys as Boss cheers. As Rosco gets the keys, Boss slaps his back in congratulations causing Rosco to drop the keys in front of Flash. Flash picks up the keys and Boss and Rosco tries to call her over. Boss insults Flash and she runs away with the keys.

Tri-County Hospital

Bo sits beside Luke’s bed, telling Luke if he doesn’t wake up he will take Sue Ellen to the dance that night. When Luke has no reaction Bo grabs his hand and begs him to wake up. Bo starts crying as he keeps asking Luke to wake up.

Police Department

Enos comes into the police department, calling for Boss and Rosco to tell them who Tex is. He notices Flash with the keys and asks what she’s doing with them. He pets her before taking them downstairs to see Boss and Rosco. Enos frees them and explain to them that Killer Kane isn’t a murderer but a boxer who Enos had seen in Los Angeles and that the two men were gamblers who were wanted men. Enos realizes they know Jud is at the hospital, confusing Boss and Rosco but all three rush out to get to the hospital. Boss and Rosco get in Boss’ car and Enos in his. They head toward the hospital.

Tri-County Hospital

Bo comes back into the waiting room, asking his family is they will come help him shut Luke up. Realizing Luke is awake, they all cheer before heading back. However Jud had gone outside and didn’t hear that. He runs into Tex. Meanwhile Daisy hugs Luke, saying he’s back and Luke says he had to wake up because he couldn’t stand to see a grown man cry. Bo hugs him and Luke asks where Jud is. Jesse says he’s outside and Bo offers to go get him. Luke says for Bo to hurry back.

Outside Tex apologizes about Luke and says for Jud to leave with them before anyone else gets hurt. Reluctantly, Jud agrees. As they get in the car, Bo comes outside looking for him. Bo orders them to let Jud go but they almost shoot at him and Bo runs and jumps on the car. Charlie manages to get Bo off the top of the car and they try to run him over as they escape.

Luke tells the others that he’s hungry and they are all laughing until Bo comes running in, covered in dirt and clearly hurt. All three become worried about him, but Bo tells them not to worry about him, that Jud was just grabbed from the hospital. The Dukes get ready to go after him but Luke says he’s coming to. They order him to stay there in bed, promising they will get Jud back as Luke will do more harm than good right now. After the other three leave, Luke ignores their warning and gets up anyway.

Outside the Dukes split up. Bo says Daisy will take Cottonwood Lane, Jesse will take Old Ridge Road, and Bo will take County 17. Jesse reminds him they don’t have guns and they all go their separate ways.

Road

Tex, Charlie, and Jud head down the road, Tex asking if Jud knows what he cost him. Jud says he should have bet on him, that he won that fight just like he knew he would. Tex says they are going to kill Jud, telling Charlie to find an isolated spot.

Tri-County Hospital

Harley leaves the hospital to take a stretcher to his ambulance when Luke calls out to him. He’s surprised to see Luke up and Luke asks to see his radio. He agrees and Luke hears Bo talk on the radio to Boss and Rosco. Rosco tries to warn Bo about the men coming for Jud and Bo says they already have him. Enos asks which way they went. Bo explains they all split up and Daisy and Jesse both report in. Meanwhile Boss, Rosco, and Enos see the car and radio it back to the others, saying the crooks are on 19 and they are following. Luke radios in saying they are headed toward Potter’s Road and he and Harley are joining the chase. Harley is against it, but knowing Luke will go with or without him decides to drive the ambulance.

Road

Everyone heads toward Potter’s Road. Enos and Rosco try to box in the car but hit each other and run each other off the road. Enos crashes into some water and Rosco goes up a tree. Tex thinks they got away but they nearly hit the ambulance Luke is in and drives into the lake. Luke tries to get out to swim after them, Harley trying to stop him. Bo arrives, telling Luke he will go and get them all and to wait by the shore. Jesse arrives, yelling for Bo to be careful as Bo finds the car. The three are trapped inside and Bo looks around to try and find a way to get the car open. He surfaces for a moment before diving again, increasing everyone’s worry.

Bo manages to find a crowbar in the busted trunk. Meanwhile Daisy and Enos arrive. In the water Bo smashes the window and gets all three out. The four surface to everyone’s relief and Enos asks if Bo is alright. Bo asks if Jud is alright as they all swim to the shore and Enos arrests Tex and Charlie. Daisy and Harley help Luke stand by the shore.

Balladeer: Well because of a Duke, Tex had lost everything he had come by crookedly. But thanks to a Duke, he didn’t lose the most valuable thing that he had, his life. Which he and Charlie would be spending most of behind bars. As for old Boss, well he was so happy to hear that Jud was leaving, which meant one less Duke in Hazzard, that he was twinkle toeing to the Texas two-step. Well, sort of. The Dukes turned over the reward money that they got for catching them baddies to the orphanage. Back at the Duke Farm, hearts were a little heavier as old Jud got ready to go. With Tex and Charlie behind bars, Jud was free to do his thing without having to look over his shoulder all the time. He promised to come back as often as he could. Well one thing don’t ever change in Hazzard. And that’s how the Duke Family feel about one another, even if it is a new Duke.

Police Department

Rosco continues to help Boss practice dancing.

Duke Farm

Jud leaves the farm, saying goodbye to Daisy first, then Jesse, and Bo. He and Luke step aside to say their goodbyes. Bo and Daisy watch as Luke tells Jud that if he ever needs anything he knows where they are. Luke tears up as Jud leaves. Bo makes his way over to Luke, reminding him what Luke said in the hospital about hating to see a grown man cry. Luke smirks and they walk arm and arm back to the house, heading inside to eat.
