Days of Shine and Roses is the first episode of season two of The Dukes of Hazzard.
After watching some old film footage of them in action, Uncle Jesse and Boss Hogg challenge each other to one last moonshine race into neighboring Hatchapee County, to settle who is the best moonshine runner once for all. They will be using jugs of water in place of moonshine, but naturally, Boss doesn't intend to play fair.
Balladeer: Welcome folks, to the Annual Retired Moonshiners get together. For 32 years now these old time moonshiners and their loved ones have been getting together, all over the country to eat, drink, tell lies, drink, and make merry as they wistfully recall those days of shine and roses.
At the Annual Retired Moonshiners get together, Jesse, Daisy, Bo, Luke, Enos, Cooter, and Rosco are watching old tapes of the moonshiners adventures. They cheer as a car flips and Jesse explains the car was Chief Bachley from Grand County. They watch Jesse driving Black Tillie and cause a police car to spin out. Then they watch Boss Hogg in the Grey Ghost. They also see Sheriff Loomis tear apart Jesse and Boss Hogg’s car when they were fishing. After the movie, Bo makes a comment about how Jesse Duke is the greatest ridge runner that ever lived. Angry and taking it personal, Rosco takes it personal and says Boss is. Bo and Rosco keep going and others chime in as well, taking sides. Boss and Jesse start to fight and decide to resolve it with a race in three days through Loomis’ territory “according to the bylaws of the Old Time Ridge Run Association”. Luke gets mad at Bo and Rosco tries to stop them but Boss tells him to shut up. They all agree to keep it a secret.
Balladeer: But when it came to keepin’ a secret about the final run between Jesse and Boss Hogg, one fellow secretly told two. Those two secretly told four. And four secretly told eight, and so on until somebody finally decided to keep the secret and tell nobody else. Which kinda cut down on the attendance. Now if your wondering why the mention of Hatchape County tends to stir people up a bit, let me introduce you folks to Sheriff Emmitt Spike Loomis, a man who has no use for moonshiners, and has his own peculiar way of showin’ it. Fortunately, old Spike has mellowed out with the years.
Sheriff Loomis finds a moonshiner and tears apart his car with a rail road spike.
On the farm, Jesse is milking a goat, Daisy is doing laundry, and Bo and Luke are fixing some screen. Luke is scolding Bo for getting them in this and tells Bo that he needs to figure out who to get Jesse out of this mess. As they agree that what is done is done, Jesse comments that it’s about time they realize that he will never back down from a challenge, especially one from Hogg. He tells them to stop messing around and get back to work.
Balladeer: With the moonshine run just two days away, Jesse and Boss areed to meet on neutral ground with their seconds. And the only neutral ground Jesse would agree to was Cooter’s garage.
Jesse and Boss meet with Rosco, Bo, and Luke at Cooter’s and let Cooter review the race route. The race will start in front of the Boar’s Nest at noon. Then they will have one invasion into Choctaw County over highway 104 through Calico Junction past Hard Labor Creek in Hatchape and back to the Boar’s Nest. Luke tries one last time to get them to make peace and Cooter and Jesse settle on the vehicles carrying 10 jugs of water. Boss says he needs to go drive again. Cooter offers him a car to use for the race which he gratefully accepts saying he will call her Black Tilly II. Luke suggests that Boss might cheat and Jesse argues.
Boss explains to Rosco that he can’t cheat as part of the association, but Rosco can cheat for him. Boss sends Rosco out.
Rosco sneaks onto the Duke Farm that night, pouring pond water in the gas tank. The next morning Jesse is tearing around the farm in the car, having fun as Bo, Luke, and Cooter watch. Rosco watches, waiting for the car to die. After a few moments the car sputters out and dies, to Rosco’s glee and the others concern. Luke tells Cooter and Bo to get the car fixed.
Enos watches Boss practice driving with the Gray Ghost Jr. He becomes nervous when Boss gets too close to him, nearly hitting him. Rosco arrives and tells Boss about Jesse’s car. They send Enos away to the jail and laugh over their success.
Bo, Luke, Cooter all work on the car and Luke says that they aren’t going to tell Jesse and Bo will be watching the car until the race since Bo is the one who got them in this mess. Bo gets upset and Cooter cuts them up. Jesse checks in and Luke lies to him.
Boss and Rosco go over the map, Rosco suggesting that he can cut through Miller’s Swamp. Rosco is busy with a crossword and asks for a five letter word for dunce. Boss spells out his name and Rosco gets excited as it fits before realizing what happened. In the main room Daisy and other patrons all start to bet on the outcome. They go outside to watch Bo drive by in Black Tilly II with Jesse, Cooter, and Luke in the car. Jesse tells Bo to show off and Boss and Rosco come outside, annoyed. They go inside and Boss yells at Rosco. Boss gets an idea to swap out the water in Jesse’s trunk with shine and call Sheriff Loomis to tip him off.
Jesse has fun racing against the General as a trial run. Bo struggles to keep up with him and they are having fun. Jesse tells them he’ll see them at the farm.
While Boss and Rosco talk about running interference, not seeing Daisy standing nearby. Boss tells Rosco that if he messes up the interference he will end up the night rent-a- cop at Shorty’s Rib Shack and pool hall which Rosco says ‘Mud River Road’ but Boss corrects him that is ‘Swamp Road’ as they moved.
Bo and Luke are turning the car when Daisy comes up to tell them that Rosco will be interfering with the race. Daisy wants to tell Uncle Jesse but Luke refuses.
Everyone arrives at the start line, including Enos. Enos inspects both vehicles and everyone goes inside to have a drink before the race. Rosco switches out Jesse’s jugs with water. Bo takes the General around back to wait for Luke and Enos starts the race. Luke tells Daisy to stay on the C.B. while he leaves. Rosco calls Loomis of the race before driving off, Bo and Luke following.
As they race they come up on Willet Bridge which only allows one car. Boss gets through first. Rosco changes into civilian clothes and uses a car from the impound yard. Bo and Luke follow him. As the race continues Cooter overhears a conversation and he and Daisy go out to their truck to find they switched the jugs from water to shine. They get the water in Cooter’s truck and Cooter heads out with Daisy. Rosco puts up a fake sign for a detour and Bo and Luke move the sign to get Jesse back on the right track again. Loomis waits getting impatient (3 hours and 22 minutes since the race started) Boss radios for Rosco to come help him but Rosco is ran off the road and crashes thanks to Bo. Cooter gets ahold of the boys saying he’s on Pine Hollow Road and they have the water. The boys try to figure out another way and Luke asks everyone to meet up at Banta Crossroads. They all four plan to change the jugs while moving. Jesse overhears and tells them that they are all stopping. Boss Hogg taunts him and Jesse agrees to let the four change the jugs.
Cooter’s Truck and the General catch up to Jesse. Cooter has Daisy take over the wheel and gets out while Luke jumps onto the back of Jesse’s car and throws out all the jugs of shine. Cooters hands over the jugs of water to Luke, who puts them in the trunk. Cooter gets back in the truck and Luke back in the General. Jesse takes off to catch Boss Hogg. Jesse then taunts Boss Hogg before passing him. They all crash into Spikes barricade then head back to the Boar’s Nest, Jesse winning. Loomis arrives, furious, but they find only water in the trunk and Boss accidently admits that he framed Jesse. Boss tries to blame it on Rosco and Bo says they left him in a tree. Rosco pulls up in a broken car, amusing everyone.
