"Dukes Strike it Rich" is the second episode of the fifth season of The Dukes Of Hazzard.
Boss Hogg swindles newlyweds Jeb (Jay W. Baker) and Carrie Morton (Phillis Hall) into buying a worthless piece of land next to the Duke farm, so the Dukes try to help the Mortons by scamming Boss Hogg, cleverly making it look like they have found gold on the property so that Boss Hogg will buy the property back.
Balladeer: Every day is hunting season in Hazzard County between the fox and the hound. That means if you’re a Duke, well, you’re a fox with Boss Hogg’s deputies playing the hounds. Well it’s better than some city jobs I know. Y’all notice how Enos’ driving has gotten better since he got back from the city? Well, it’s somewhat better.
Coy and Vance drive the General, speeding away from a patrol car. Vance tells Coy to keep on it. Enos drives and Cletus calls them on the CB saying that Boss wants them arrested for an unpaid parking ticket. Coy notes the Farm’s south gate is up ahead. Vance tells them that the ticket is fake and reminds them that they are crossing onto their property and the officers can’t come after them without a warrant. Enos tries to stop from crossing onto the farm, going through the old fence. All four get out of the cars and Enos apologizes to which Vance snaps that they should be. Enos offers to pay for it and Coy claims that the fence will cost the same as the ticket. Cletus and Enos pay for the ticket before leaving. Coy and Vance set about fixing the fence, noting that they don’t get over there much. Hearing crying, they spot a couple in a clearing and approach. When Vance asks if there is anything they can do, the man, Jeb, says they can hang a man named Hogg. Vane says for Coy to approach them as they are going to hear ‘a familiar old story’.
After introducing themselves, they take Jeb and Carrie back to the house. The couple explain what happened and Jesse asks why did they buy it without seeing it. They tell the Dukes they used everything they had to get the property and that Boss still has the contract. Jesse grabs his hat saying he’s going to talk to Boss to get their money back. Vance and Coy ask to go instead as he’s too riled up. Jesse watches them go, stunned.
Boss and Rosco are in the office, Boss on the phone about selling another piece of farm property. Boss assures the woman on the phone that they don’t need to drill for water but she realizes it’s a scam and hangs up. Vance and Coy come in and explain they are there for the Morton’s. Vance says they cheated them and Coy reminds them that the land was a swamp. Boss says it was a legal contract. Vance asks if they can see it but Boss refuses, pointing out where it is locked up before they toss Vance and Coy out. Boss tells Rosco to have Cletus and Enos tail them.
Outside the boys talk about how they need to see that contract. Vance gets the idea to see if Cooter will help. Cooter looks up as they drive up and the two explain the situation and Cooter agrees to help them out. As the boys leave, Cletus and Enos follow them. Coy notices pretty quickly and Vance decides to mess with them. They race through the town square and Cletus hits a number of trash cans.
Inside, Boss is going through the Hazzard Phone directory, coming up with a person named Hortense Bledsoe. Boss proposes that is a rich widow lady. Rosco informs Boss that Cooter is currently towing away his car and the two of them charge outside. Cooter drives off with the car and boss and Rosco get in Rosoc’s car to drive after him.
Coy and Vance continue to run from Cletus and Enos while Boss and Rosco continue to chase Cooter. The boys go toward Hazzard Pond and Cletus says they won’t get him this time. However they trick Enos and Cletus into the pond. After checking to make sure the two are okay they drive away and Enos and Cletus bicker. Enos finds a frog in his shirt and says Cletus should let him drive.
Cooter stops and Boss and Rosco start yelling at him. Cooter says he was doing them a favor as there is a factory recall on that model for defective windshield wiper blades. Boss denies it. Enos meanwhile calls Boss and Rosco and informs them that they lost the boys. Boss gets upset and asks where they lost them before saying he can smell a plan. Boss says Cooter wanted him out of town and asks what kind of fool Cooter thinks they are.
The boys break into the office and get in the filing cabinet for the contract. As they look, Boss and Rosco returns to the station, parking behind a large dump truck. Coy finds the contract and they go to leave but Boss and Rosco see them. They push over Boss and Rosco before bolting. Vance goes to the dump truck and sets it to dump the load of sand on Rosco’s car as Coy gets the General. Rosco is unable to start the car and Boss tries to push it, moving it just in time for Boss to get covered in sand. Rosco runs over and pulls him out. Boss yells that he will get those boys if it’s his last living act.
Coy and Vance read the contract to find that there is a clause written in the contract that Boss will not have to refund them for the fraud. They decide to go see Jesse and get his input.
Boss and Rosco continue to drive, Boss spitting out the sand from the truck. They see Vance and Coy and chase after them. Enos and Cletus also get back on the road, Cletus sneezing and Enos getting upset that he scared him. Cletus and Enos come at the boys from the front and Boss says for them to block the road. They do, forcing the boys to stop and Boss and Rosco hitting them from the other side.
Rosco puts flea powder on Flash while Boss talks to Coy and Vance who are locked in the cell behind them. He thanks them for bringing the contract back and tells them that they will be there for a while. Daisy and Jesse storm in, asking what charges he has this time. Boss admits they have real charges this time. The boys says for Jesse to go home and Jesse agrees. Daisy protests but Jesse insists the boys know what they are doing. Boss refuses to talk about the Morton’s and walks out with Jesse and Daisy following. Meanwhile Coy and Vance start scratching and tell Rosco there is fleas in the cell. Rosco ignores them at first but seeing them scratching he approaches them. The boys ask if they can have the powder. Rosco gives them some and Vance blows it in his face. As Rosco starts sneezing they take his keys and unlock the cell, fleeing.
Coy calls Jesse on the CB and informs them they escaped. They tell Jesse and Daisy to meet them at the old stile site in Choctaw Hollow.
The Dukes and Morton’s meet. Coy says that Boss won’t get the money back and Jesse says there is no way to force him too. Daisy proposes they sell the land but Coy remarks no one would buy it. Vance suggests Boss and Rosco. Daisy ask why and Vance says that he has an idea to get Boss begging to get it back. Jesse asks what and Vance asks about the gold inlay that fell out a few years before and his gold cufflinks, both items Daisy knows the location of. Vance also tells Coy to get the gold medals from the state archery meets and says to bring all that gold to Cooter’s.
Cooter melts down all the gold they brought to make a gold nugget. Coy asks what Vance is going to do with it. Vane says they are going to the court house.
Jesse, Vance, and Coy march in the court house and Jesse hands over the gold nugget to Boss, saying it will cover the boys bail. Boss and Rosco are stunned, asking what it is and Jesse says its real gold. Boss denies it and while they argue Vance slips the CB on. The three Dukes leave. Boss, Cletus, Rosco, and Enos all look at the gold and Boss asks where the Dukes could get any gold. Boss says for Rosco to go get Rhuebottom, the counter assayer. Rosco agrees.
The Dukes, Morton’s, and Cooter all make fake gold nuggets together.
Rosco, Boss, Cletus, and Enos watch Mr. Rhuebottom as he looks over the gold nugget. He informs them it is real gold, about $700 worth. Coy, Vance, and Jesse listen in on the conversation. Boss tells Rosco to tail the Dukes and find out where they got the gold.
Outside Vance says to get Rosco and the deputies off his tail and Jesse goes to help Daisy and Cooter with the fake nuggets. The boys drive past the court house as Rosco, Cletus, and Enos come out. The three drive off after the boys.
After chasing them out of town, the group continues down the dirt roads. Vance calls Daisy on the CB an asks if she found ‘any more shinny stuff’ and she says lots of it. They say they will when they lose Rosco and the rest. Rosco, thinking he wasn’t supposed to hear it, gets excited. Rosco tells Enos to follow him as they go off road but Rosco is forced to stop, Enos crashing into him and the General turning back and jumping over both. The officers bicker as they boys head back to town.
Cooter shows the boys a limo his cousin Tyrone is letting them use. Daisy shows them a dress the Tri-County Little Theatre Group let her borrow a dress. Jesse says she needs to sew it up a little.
Enos brings Boss and Rosco lunch as sits with them. Boss insists they need to know where the Dukes have stolen the gold. As Boss begins to eat the limo pulls up at the Boar’s Nest, shocking Cletus. Cooter gets up, dressed in a fancy suit, stunning Cletus even more who rushes inside. He tells Boss, Rosco, and Enos about the limo and Cooter while laughing. Jesse comes in, dressed in a fancy suit. Jesse tells people at the bar that drinks are on him. Vance comes in, ordering champagne for everyone, saying ‘imported naturally’. Boss concludes this must be a dream. Coy then comes in, also in a fancy suit saying he needs to call his broker. However everyone is stunned when Daisy comes in wearing a fancy red dress. Enos, Cletus, and Rosco are all captivated with her and Enos asks if that is Daisy or a movie star. Daisy says it’s just little rich her. Jesse remarks that he thought she was going to sew up the dress. Vance goes to pay with a gold nugget but Jesse says it’s too rich for them, taking the gold back and giving John money. Boss approaches them saying he has no idea where they got the gold but he will find out. Jesse tells him to do that and they decide to leave. Coy and Vance go outside with Cooter. The three burst out laughing and Cooter says he’s taking the ‘gold nuggets’ to the creek. Cooter tells them he’d help them any time.
Coy and Vance go back inside and they toast to their ‘new yacht’.
Cooter is forced to stop when the radiator goes on the car.
Vance and Jesse scold Coy for his muddy shoes. Coy remarks that he can’t stay clean working in the creek bed and Jesse says he shouldn’t be wearing his good clothes in the creek bed. Boss suspects that the gold was found in the creek bed and says he and Rosco should check it out. The two leave. Daisy and the others are amused but hear the phone ring. Cooter tells them that the limo busted and he can’t fix it. He says he’s at Twin Forks and informs the Dukes about what happened. Coy and Vance leave and take Dixie.
Vance and Coy pass Cooter, grabbing the bag of fake gold as they do. They nearly hit a truck in the process by accident, but avoid the accident. Coy gets back on the road, heading toward the farm. Boss and Rosco, in Rosco’s car, are also rushing to the farm.
Coy and Vance get to the creek first and rush to ‘dust the creek’, tossing the fake gold nuggets on their land and the Morton’s. As they finish, Boss and Rosco arrive and look into the creek. Rosco spots ‘something shinny’ and accidentally pushes Boss into the water. Boss grabs a handful of mud to hit Rosco with only to find a gold nugget. The two look around, getting more and more excited as they do. Rosco tells him that it’s the Duke’s land and Boss disregards it. Rosco tells him there is more on the Morton’s land and Boss made a mistake by selling it. Boss thinks for a moment saying they didn’t make a mistake as the contract is illegal and he’s going to get the land back. Coy and Vance watch, excited. Vance remarks he hasn’t had this much fun since shore leave in Shanghai.
Boss and Rosco stop at the garage, Rosco saying there is sand in the carburetor. Boss sees Enos and Cletus arriving and tells them to wait for him at the bank. During the drive, Cletus and Enos fight about driving. Boss comes out of the bank with some money and clean clothes before they leave for the Duke Farm.
Rosco starts to lean his car and decides to use some of the tools around the garage. He finds some gold nuggets and silver ones. He realizes the ‘silver’ is lead and finds gold spray paint. He realizes the gold is fake and the Dukes are running a scam. Seeing Cletus’ car, since Cletus and Enos took Boss’, he decides to take the car.
The Dukes arrive at the Farm to see Jeb and Carrie had set up a small party.
Rosco tries to call Boss to inform him about the scam but the CB is broken.
Boss, Cletus, and Enos arrive at the Farm. The Dukes and Morton’s greet him and Boss remarks it must be good to be rich. Jesse introduces the Morton’s again and Boss says he was hoping to find them there. He tells them that he is an honest man and that he found that the contract they signed was illegal. Boss says he’s tearing it up and that he is buying the property back. Vance says the problem with that is the Dukes were buying the land to make it a lake. Boss insists to give them double for the land and Jeb asks what Uncle Jesse thinks. Boss says they need to do what they think is best. Jesse says they can always find other property and Daisy protests but the Morton’s agree to the deal. Vance and Coy quickly check to bag to ensure all the money is there. Jesse offers to give him a drink but Boss says he’s leaving to record the deed at Capitol City. He leaves Cletus and Enos to watch his new land.
Rosco arrives and asks where Boss is. He tells the Dukes he knows they are using lead and are fake. Vance tries to explain it away but Rosco leaves to stop Boss and tells Cletus and Enos to arrest the boys. Vance and Coy say they need to stop Rosco. Coy and Vance claim they are going to put the General in the barn and drive off, leaving a stunned Cletus and Enos to watch.
Boss excitedly heads to Capitol City. As Rosco tries to drive after him, Coy and Vance drive into his way. Rosco tries to take another route and the boys chase after him again. Rosco tries to lose them again and Vance tells him to pull over. Rosco tries to get some space and says they are under arrest. They hit the cars against each other and almost run into a truck. The boys are forced to stop.
Boss goes into the Hall of Records at Capitol City.
Coy and Vance arrive and Coy thinks they lost this round, However they see Rosco had only just arrived too. They jump over a construction site to reach Rosco, stopping him. As Boss comes out of the Hall of Records, Rosco and the boys run up to him. Rosco tells Boss about the lead and the scam. Boss says to arrest them for fraud. Coy says if they do arrest the boys for fraud, they need to arrest Boss too. Boss realizes he was beaten, saying he thought when Bo and Luke left his troubles were over.
Balladeer: Well it was a tradeoff, even-steven. Boss’ land scam for the Duke’s gold scam. Them nice young Morton's made enough money out of this to buy a real farm on the other side of the county. The Dukes? Well they just kept on being Dukes, whose full time job is keeping things normal for Hazzard County.
The Dukes hug the Morton’s, wishing them luck on their new farm.
