"Lawman of the Year" is the third episode of the fifth season of The Dukes Of Hazzard.

Summary[]

Boss Hogg hires two demolition experts, Jack Morris (Duke Stroud) and his sidekick Burnett (Al White), to rob the Hazzard jewelry store, and Coy and Vance check into it while being chased by Cletus and Enos. When Boss sends Rosco to arrest Coy and Vance in order to get them out of the way, Rosco refuses because he has nominated himself for the "Lawman of the Year" award. As it turns out, however, Enos and Cletus are both elected "Lawman of the Year".

Plot[]

Balladeer: The men around Hazzard take pride in their cooking, their women, and their cars. And old Coy and Vance Duke are about the best drivers around. They have to be to keep up with Daisy, a real double threat. And she can cook too. Now where’s he gonna find that in Hazzard? Them boys better get moving, they cook bad. How some ever, I got a feeling that there ain’t nobody gonna win this race.

Road

Daisy racing around in Dixie with the boys following in the General. Daisy calls them on the CB, asking what is with them and they should be giving her competition. They go through the creek bed and Coy says they are just taking it easy until they find level ground. Daisy reminds them of the speed trap on Old Mill Road and says that the loser cooks breakfast and the dishes for a week. Daisy drives over a cord that changes the speed limit sign form 55 to 15 mph. Flash barks to wake Rosco up and alert him.

As Daisy passes him, Rosco pulls her over. Rosco tells her they got her this time and Daisy says she was going 55 mph. Rosco says it’s 15 now and Daisy says she will take him to court. Rosco takes her to the car.

Vance in Coy stop, seeing two men on the side of the road with a green car. They offer to help but the two men aggressively refuse. Vance notices a gun on the front seat of their car and apologizes saying they were just trying to help and they’ll leave now. As the boys leave, Coy moans about cooking and washing dishes but Vance tells him about the gun.

Police Station

Rosco brings Daisy in, surprising Cletus and Enos. Daisy tells Rosco she doesn’t aim to be there long and Rosco accuses her of trying to escape. Cletus and Enos both plead Daisy’s case, saying that he should set a lower pail and Daisy won’t cause any problems. Rosco disregards them and leaves to get back to his speed trap.

Duke Farm

Coy and Vance arrive at the Farm to see Jesse sitting on the picnic table. Coy says they are ready to take their medicine for losing to Daisy. Jesse is confused and says he hasn’t seen Daisy since that morning. Vance calls for Daisy on the CB and when he gets nothing, Cooter calls them and tells them Rosco arrested Daisy. Cooter says he’s going to get her jeep now and the boys say they’ll go get her from the jail. Jesse says he’ll meet them there.

Road

Boss is waiting on the road side for the men in the green car. Boss snaps that he’s been waiting for them for an hour and asks that no one saw them come into town. They admit they encountered two boys in an orange car and Boss realizes they mean Coy and Vance. Boss gets upset saying that was the last people who should have seen them. Boss explains he has a job for them of the jewelry store he owns in the middle of Hazzard.

Town of Hazzard

Boss, Morris, and Burnett look at the jewelry store. Boss says the sucker sold his wife Lulu some fake jewelry and he doesn’t allow anyone to steal in his county without his say. The men ask about the security of the store and Boss says the security is pretty good. Boss says they are going to go through a manhole, come up through the basement and rob the store and no one will ever know. Boss also admits he isn’t telling Rosco about this as he wants to leave him out.

Road

Another vehicle goes through the speed trap, this time Miz Tisdale. Rosco is annoyed when he sees who it was. Miz Tisdale remarks she has a letter for him and figured she’d find him at the speed trap. Rosco shows her that it was from the Lawman of the Year Committee and he was nominated this year. He explains there is going to be an observer coming to watch him secretly and she says the observer will probably not like the speed trap. Rosco agrees and says he won’t allow any of Boss’ schemes to occur, starting with letting Daisy out of jail.

Police Department

Cletus and Enos watch Daisy finish a piece of pie and lemonade on a fancy table in her jail cell. They ask if there is anything they can do to make her more comfortable, a coffee or pillow and Enos even offers to go get her some coffee. Daisy says the flowers, ice cream, and berry pie are perfect and thanks them. Jesse and the boys arrive and tell them to let Daisy go. Jesse says they have $50 for bail. Cletus explains it’s $500 this time. Daisy says it’s alright. Rosco arrives and says it’s $5 and that it’s suspended as Daisy is free to go. Everyone is confused. Vance asks for his angle. Rosco denies having an angle and Rosco admits to the Lawman of the Year committee.

The Dukes come out to see Cooter just brought Dixie. Jesse says he and Daisy will ride back together and Jesse invites Cooter for food. Vance and Coy head for the General and see the two men leaving Rhuebottoms. They walk over to see Mr. Rhuebottom, who greats them.  When the boys ask about the men who just left, Mr. Rhuebottom explains they were trying to buy dynamite but he is fresh out and won’t have any until next week. Vane says that is a bad mix, dynamite and guns, and wants to keep an eye on them. They drive off to follow the men.

Road

Coy cuts across country to catch up to the men. The two notice and assume they can lose Coy and Vance without too much trouble. However they are not able to lose the boys and wonder how the General can keep up with them. They comment about stopping to see what the boys want but Burnett says no, they don’t want to upset or double cross Boss until after they clean out the jewelry store. The front tire in the General blows and they go off the road and into a ditch. The boys get out of the car, wondering what spooked the men so much and Vance says they need to warn Rosco. Coy says he’ll call Cooter and Vance will change the tire. Vance protests, but Coy rushes off.

Town of Hazzard

When Cletus starts writing a phony ticket, Rosco stops him. He tells Cletus to stop as they are being observed. Rosco assumes the woman at the bank with curlers in her hair is the observer. Rosco makes a scene about Cletus making the ticket when Coy and Vance pull up. Rosco agrees to listen to them and Coy tells him about the strangers with a gun and dynamite. Rosco tries to hush them and Rosco tells them if he went after everyone who was suspicious he’d have to start with Boss. The boys leave, upset at his lack of listening. The boys drive out of town, saying they will have to watch.

Road

Boss loans the Hazzard County Department of Sewers van to Morris and Burnett and runs through the plan with them. When Morris asks about Vance and Coy, Boss says he intends to have the boys sitting in a jail cell until this is over. Boss sends them off.

Town of Hazzard

While walking in town, Rosco notices a baby and tries to coo at it but the baby flings milk in his face. Annoyed he says it’s an ugly baby after the mother leaves. Morris and Burnett go into the sewer.

Police Department

Rosco tells Enos that it’s Flash’s lunch time and asks Enos to go get food in the car. Enos agrees and on his way out he runs into Boss. Boss asks what he’s doing and Enos says he’s looking for ‘Doggy num-num’s’. Boss approaches Rosco and tells him to go arrest Vance and Coy. Rosco asks what charge and Boss says he will think of one later. Cletus gives them a suggestion but Rosco refuses, shocking Boss. Rosco explains he is nominated for the Lawman of the Year, to which Boss asks what fool would do that. Rosco says he’s doing this all fair, even if it means arresting Boss. Boss sends Enos and Cletus out to arrest the boys and they race to the car to find out who will drive first.

In the sewer the two men begin to chip at the wall between them and the store.

Hazzard Garage

Vance and Coy tell Cooter what they know. Cooter says he hasn’t seen it and if he does he’ll let them know. Cletus and Enos arrive and say they are to be arrested. Cletus says he’s been taking karate lessons and doesn’t want any funny business, which just makes the boys laugh. They tease Cletus before fleeing and Enos and Cletus fall into the cement that Cooter was smoothing out. Cooter calls them samurai deputies before pulling them out of the concrete. Vance and Coy drive away in the General.

Post Office

Realizing the men might have wanted posters, they decide to go into the post office. They approach Miz Tisdale and she points out the wanted posters. The boys start looking though the wanted posters but duck when they notice Rosco. Miz Tisdale scolds them. Outside Rosco assumes there is an old lady trying to cross the street and go to help her.

In the sewers the two men find their path blocked by solid concrete. They realize they need the dynamite to get through.

Post Office

Not finding the two men in the wanted posters, the boys go to leave but Miz Tisdale stops them, informing them she has a few that she hasn’t put up yet. The boys start looking through them as Rosco helps the woman across the street outside. The woman, furious as she didn’t want to cross the street, beats him with her umbrella before leaving. Inside the boys find Jack Morris’ wanted poster. They leave.

Police Department

As Boss sits in his office eating, Rosco comes in and says he’s giving back all of Boss’ phony scams. Boss protests that he wouldn’t have given Rosco any of it if it was useful.

Road

Vance and Coy head to the Police Department assuming Rosco will have to do something. Cletus and Enos chase after them and they decide to lose the officers first. Coy tricks them into driving in the pond and Vance checks to make sure they are alright before the two head back to town. Cletus and Enos get out of the pond, Cletus saying they just need to make sure they don’t chase the boys near water.

Police Department

Rosco and Flash are taking pictures and Vance and Coy slip into the office. They show Rosco the wanted poster but Boss comes in saying the only ones being arrested are them. The boys show Boss the wanted poster to Boss’ shock, saying that they saw that man in town and the man might just be trying to rob the bank. Boss tries to write it off and tells Rosco to arrest the boys, but Rosco refuses. Boss decides he will just do it himself but the boys blind him with the camera before fleeing.

Road

Vance is concerned as how little Boss cares. Vance concludes maybe they are teaming up together. Vance calls Cooter and informs him they are bank robbers. Meanwhile Daisy and Jesse, who are washing Dixie, hear what is going on. Vance says for his to go north and they will go east. He mentions that they’ll try for Daisy and Jesse next but Daisy grabs the CB and informs them they are going west and south. The other three scatter on the roads.

Boss meets up with the two men and they explain that they need dynamite to get through the concrete wall. Boss tells them to go to his gravel pits and get as much as they need. The three go their separate ways.

Gravel Pits

While everyone continues to look for the two men, Daisy spots them. She calls Vance and Coy, saying the men are going east on Sawmill Road and the only thing there is the gravel company. The boys tell her to follow without being spotted, which she agrees. At the shack the two men get a crate of dynamite when they hear an engine. They take cover as Daisy arrives. Not seeing anything, Daisy decides to check it out despite the boys telling her to stay put. As Daisy enters the dynamite shack, the two men ambush her from behind. They tie her to a chair.

The boys become alarmed when Daisy doesn’t answer. They drive up and see the jeep is gone. Daisy kicks over a number of boxes in the shack and the boys hear it, running in and finding Daisy. They untie her and Coy asks if she saw which way they went. The two men come in again, this time fighting with Vance and Coy. Morris gets his gun and uses Daisy as a hostage. The two men leave, locking the three in the shack. The three Dukes try to burst out but Vance tells them to forget it as the door isn’t going anywhere. Daisy pulls an alarm

Police Department

While Rosco puts flea powder on Flash, the phone rings. Enos answers it as Cletus is putting up posters. Enos says that it’s Mabel, informing them that the alarm at the gravel pit is going on and there is a possible fire in the dynamite shack. Rosco asks why they are bothering him as if there was a fire in the dynamite shack it would have blown to Hatchapee by now. Enos then hangs up on her. Cletus says they need to do something and Rosco says he and Flash are going on patrol. Cletus signals to Enos that it will be the two of them and they race outside, fighting over who will drive. Enos wins and they drive away.

Road

Jesse and Cooter meet up on the road and decide to go to the gravel pits where they said they were going.

Police Department

Boss is eating a large bowl of marshmallows when he gets a call from the thieves. They inform Boss that they got the dynamite and they stopped Coy and Vance. Boss promises to meet them in town.

Gravel Pits

Jesse and Cooter arrive at the shack and Daisy recognizes the sound of the truck. Jesse bangs on the door to confirm the kids are in there and he and Jesse set up the tow truck to rip the door off the shack. The three Dukes are freed and the boys tell them they need to go to town. Jesse and Daisy look for the jeep while Cooter follows the boys back.

Town of Hazzard

Boss waits for the two men to arrive, Boss saying he has the jeweler over in the county building filling out a number of business permits and that no one will hear the blasting and if they do, they’ll just assume it’s a car backfiring.  The two go into the manhole. Meanwhile Rosco is walking Flash.

Road

Vance and Coy try to warn Rosco about the crooks. Enos and Cletus hear them and see the line of Dukes and Cooter headed for town. They turn and follow the group.

Town of Hazzard

Rosco assumes he found the observer when he sees Boss standing on grass that has a keep off sign. As Rosco confronts Boss, the two men set off the dynamite.  Rosco gives Boss a ticket and the dynamite goes off. While walking, Rosco notices a man littering while the crooks clean out the store. The men return with the stolen items and inform Boss they are double crossing him. Boss falls into the manhole as they leave, getting stuck. Rosco helps him out and Boss informs Rosco that they just robbed the store. The men try to flee town but the Dukes and the others arrive and give chase. Rosco and Boss follow, leaving Flash in town.

Road

The two men in the green car are trying to escape, with Vance and Coy in the General, then Enos and Cletus in the patrol car, then Cooter, then Daisy, then Jesse, and lastly Rosco and Boss in Rosco’s patrol car. Burnett open fire on them, hitting the windshield and is forced to stop by the Duke boys. Burnett and Morris fight Vance and Luke. The evidence of the robbery is tosses to Enos and Cletus as well as the crooks. Cletus and Enos are given all the credit.

Balladeer: And that was the end of the great Hazzard jewel robbery. The crooks tried to implicate Boss and naturally Boss denied everything. And seeing as how there’s no witnesses, Boss got off scot-free. Except, he had to pay off all the dynamite damage to the jewelry store. Miz Tisdale gave Cletus and Enos a special delivery letter, informing them that the Support Your Sheriff Committee had voted them Lawmen of the Year. You see, Miss Tisdale was the observer for the Support Your Sheriff Committee. And old Rosco, he took it like a man.

Police Department

Enos and Cletus put Morris and Burnett behind bars as Rosco looks over the evidence. The Dukes head outside and are approached by Miz Tisdale. Boss, Rosco, Flash, Enos and Cletus come out as well. Miz Tisdale delivers a letter to Cletus. It was naming Enos and Cletus as the Lawmen of the Year. They are excited and upset, Rosco faints.
