"New Deputy in Town" is the twenty-first episode of the fourth season of The Dukes Of Hazzard.
Summary[]
A shapely, cajoling, conniving blonde named Linda May Barnes (Tracy Scoggins) is hired as Boss Hogg's new deputy after she easily arrests Bo and Luke on various traffic charges. Boss and Rosco are too distracted by Linda May's sex appeal to notice why she accepted the job -- her boyfriend, Rafe Logan (Terence Knox), who faces trial on murder and robbery charges, is scheduled to stay overnight at the Hazzard County Jail on the way to where he will be put on trial, and she and Rafe's brother Denny (Gary Graham) plan to free him from the marshal (Rayford Barnes) who is transporting him. Bo and Luke try to stop Linda May and Denny before they can help Rafe escape.
Plot[]
Balladeer: It all started one Hazzard morning as Bo and Luke Duke was coming back from a hunting trip. They weren’t hunting coon, weren’t hunting possum, they weren’t even hunting women. They were hunting The American Green, uncle money. Now friends that’s an oath. Right now, it looks like the duke boys are on a losing streak with more to come.
Bo and Luke are racing around in the General. Bo asks how they are doing now, and Luke says they got $40 for the fencing job bringing them to $69 as long as he doesn’t let it blow out the window. Bo says they are only $700 short. They pass Cletus’ speed trap and Rosco and Flash come after them to which Luke says he is playing their song and asks if Bo is speeding. Bo says he’s going 54 on the nose. Luke says they can’t afford a citation now and for Bo to step on it. Bo goes toward a work zone, to which Luke yells at him and Bo abandons the attempt at the last moment, stopping. Rosco does as well.
Police Department
Boss starts a meeting which only Rosco and Flash are in attendance. Boss informs them that there is no new business and he’s having a financial crisis. Rosco tells him he just gave the boys a $25 ticket and Boss says that is just a piece of paper and proposes a new law that all tickets will be paid for in cash on the spot or they will be arrested. They pass the law and Boss gets a phone call. He answers it and Lulu is calling. Boss tells her he is busy and for her to eat. He tells Rosco to go write tickets. Flash eats Boss’ gavel and Boss tries to give her a ticket for destruction of county property before ending the meeting.
Balladeer: Now, the situation was a mite ticklish. You see, when they gave out pride the Dukes got more than a double dose. A lot of the Hazzard folks owed them money for the work they’d done for them, and the dukes had to try and collect that money from everybody without looking like they’s hard up, you know? Which they are. You see, Jesse fells the same way about that tractor that the boys feel about General Lee. Some folks are like that about machinery.
Duke Farm
Jesse, Bo, Luke, and Daisy meet up on the farm. Jesse says with the money the boys brought and the $150 they had they are still behind on the tractor. Daisy says they need $500 more for the tractor and without it they won’t have crops. Jesse tries to think, and Luke points out they still have some coming from Mr. Pringle for the roofing job. Daisy says she still has two weeks back pay and Jesse says Bill Tucker still owes him for a load of corn. Luke says a little here and a little there. They scatter again to collect more.
Road
Cletus sets up a stop sign on the road, pushing it out in front of Bo and Luke as they pass. Bo wonders where it came from and Cletus chases after them, answering the question. Cletus hits a tree as he runs from them but another cop car chases after them. The boys are stunned when the car overtakes them and cuts them off. They get out as the driver does, seeing Linda May Barnes. Bo remarks he has died and gone to speed trap heaven. Linda May tells them to get out of the car and that she saw them escaping from Cletus. The boys say that was only Cletus and they do that all the time. Cletus comes over and while attracted to her, assures her she doesn’t need a gun as it’s just Bo and Luke. Linda May explains she is there for a temporary duty and leaves to report in.
Police Department
Linda May arrives in town and heads into the Police Department. Inside Rosco gets angry on the phone, being informed by an officer in Roseville that they are sending a temporary officer to Hazzard. Boss comes out of his office, eating a full pizza and Rosco fills him in. Boss is annoyed as is Rosco. They are approached by Linda May, and both are stunned. They greet her and Linda hands him a set of secret orders. Boss asks what it’s about but Lulu calls again, Boss telling her to eat another meal before hanging up. Rosco reads the orders, asking if they are kidding about Rafe Logan. Rosco reads over the orders saying that Rafe Logan is being transported by car from Roseville to Atlanta and will stop for the night in Hazzard. Rosco is upset and concerned and Boss is excited. Boss says he can charge the government a lot for boarding a dangerous criminal. Boss again offers her a piece of pizza, saying he made it himself with his own recipe. Rosco and Linda May both take one but Boss mentions that it is covered in chitlins and smothered in hog fat, disgusting Rosco to the point he puts his piece back.
Bo and Luke pick up Cooter and walk over to look at Linda May’s car. While Luke and Cooter open the hood, Bo looks at two pretty girls who pass by, but they talk to Luke before continuing on. Bo and Cooter mock him before getting the hood open. However, Cletus pulls up and the boys duck down in front of the car.
Inside boss tries to get Linda May to eat the pizza while Rosco watches in alarm. While Boss starts talking to Rosco about his plans, she tosses it in the trash. Boss explains that he wants to sell tickets for people to come see the jail cell and Linda May becomes alarmed. She reminds Boss it’s supposed to be secret and boss assures her he meant after Rafe Logan left. Cletus comes in and greets them. Cletus explains he caught Bo and Luke before correcting it to Barnes. Boss is happy and tells Cletus to give him the $25 citation. Cletus explains that he gave the boys a $25 ticket, but they only had a $50 and Cletus didn’t have change, so the boys went home to get it. He tells them that the boys never paid for the ticket to Boss’ anger. Cletus says he’ll go across the street to Cooter’s for the boys but when he opens the blinds the see the boys and Cooter by Linda May’s car. Boss tells them to collect $525 for the ticket and damages and if the boys don’t have the money arrest them. As Rosco and Cletus head out, Linda May asks if they want some help, angering them.
Bo and Luke are explaining to Cooter over the engine about how Linda May caught them. Rosco and Cletus jump out at them, telling them to freeze. The boys are surprised and even more confused and upset when Rosco says they owe $525. Cooter isn’t amused and Rosco asks what they are doing with the vehicle anyway. Cooter tells them to look at the engine and while Rosco and Cletus are, Cooter shuts the hood on their ties letting Bo and Luke run away. They get in the General and drive off. Rosco and Cletus get free of the car and chase after them in their patrol cars.
Road
A truck full of wooden spools goes up a steep road. Bo follows and the ropes snap. Luke warns Bo as the large items roll down the hill and Bo avoids them all. Rosco and Cletus meanwhile hit them, and Cletus loses two more fenders.
Town of Hazzard
Linda May goes into a phone booth and makes a call. Denny answers and Linda May tells him they bought the story about her being an officer and the fake orders. Denny informs her that Rafe should be in Hazzard by 5 and she informs him that by 5:05 they’ll have his brother sprung. They agree to meet at 4 on a dirt road off of 49.
Road
Daisy arrives in Dixie while Bo and Luke are checking over the wiring in the General. A few moments later Jesse arrives and the Dukes discuss what happened. Jesse and Daisy are confused, and Daisy encourages them not to give up. The boys then take off.
Police Department
After learning that Bo and Luke escaped, Boss swears in Linda May as the acting sheriff of Hazzard County. Rosco and Cletus protest but Boss says he doesn’t want anything to go wrong when Rafe Logan gets there. Rosco reminds him he was elected, and Boss takes his badge before handing it to Linda May. He then names Rosco as the deputy by taking Cletus’ badge, threatening Rosco that if they don’t catch Bo and Luke, he’ll take it out of Rosco’s pay. Boss then takes Linda May to his office, pausing when Lulu calls again. Boss and Linda May then go into Boss’ office and Rosco says he wants to spit and it’s all the duke’s fault. He says he’s going to nail the boys this time and Rosco and Cletus run outside and get in their cars before heading out to find the boys.
Road
Bo and Luke collect $50 from an old man who tells them that come spring he will put a new roof on the barn. Bo tells him they’ll do it before Luke drives them away. As they go Bo says it’s growing slow and that they should go over to Cooter’s and see if he sold the CB. Luke says that is a good idea and Bo remarks there’s a first time for everything. Luke says not to let Cooter know about their financial problems and Bo says Cooter would probably go sell his boots if he knew they needed the money.
As the boys' drive Rosco spots them. He radio’s Cletus who is nearby and Rosco says they got the boys in a box. He chases after BO and Luke as they pass Cletus. Cletus blocks the road, and the boys notice Cletus. Luke goes on the bank around Cletus and when Rosco tries to follow he flips his car. The boys look back to check on him while Cletus gets out to get Rosco from the wreck.
Denny Logan heads to Hazzard.
Police Department
Boss tells Linda May he’s going to make a pizza and invites her to watch him make it. Meanwhile outside, Lulu heads to the Police Department. Inside Boss starts rolling out the pizza dough and invites to show Linda May how to do it. Lulu arrives at his door, hearing Boss and Linda May talking and misunderstanding she storms in, yelling at Boss saying that is why he was too busy for her. Boss protests that he was just showing Linda May how to roll a pizza dough, throwing it in the air to demonstrate but it lands on his face. Furious Lulu calls him an animal and storms out. Boss remarks ‘what a woman’.
Hazzard Garage
Bo and Luke Park on a back street and sneak into the Garage where Cooter is singing. Seeing the boys, he greets them before telling them he sold the CB. He tells them his cousin bought it for $56. Bo takes it and Cooter says if they are short, he’s got some money in the mattress. Bo denies it, saying they just got a bunch of junk in the barn they were getting rid of. Cooter tells them he’s looking over Linda May’s car and Bo and Cooter agree that she ‘has more curves then Mountain Pine Road’. Luke says that he feels like something isn’t right. They look at the engine and Cooter confirms he’s never seen a police car look like that.
Police Department
Boss calls Linda May from his home where Lulu is throwing luggage at Boss and Alex. Boss says he has to put her in charge of everything while Lulu continues to pelt him with bags.
Road
As they head down the road, Rafe Logan asks Ken Collins if they will stop for the night, which the Marshal confirms.
Hazzard Garage
Luke tells Cooter they will have to check the woman out as Luke isn’t going to be able to sleep. Bo asks Luke how they’re going to do it. Luke says he figures Bo can handle it, shocking Bo. Luke says Bo will put in a call to the Roseville Police Department, to which Bo asks, ‘I will?’ and Luke confirms. Bo follows him to the phone and Luke says for him to ask about patrol car 109 or just ‘think of something for once’ before asking Cooter if they can use his phone, which he agrees. Luke has Maybel connect him to the Roseville Police Department at Bo looks to Cooter for support and Cooter soothes him.
Town of Hazzard
Rosco and Cletus arrive in town and Rosco pulls over to allow Cletus to pull up alongside. Rosco tells Cletus that he’s going to take his car to Cooter’s to remove the dents. Cletus agrees he needs to as well since he lost three fenders. Cletus asks if they should check in with Linda May, which enrages Rosco. Rosco then tries to drive away but Cletus bangs into his car to his fury.
Hazzard Garage
Cooter and Luke listen to Bo’s phone call as he confirms there is no car 109. Bo tells them it’s a phony and they all remark that she must be too. Luke says they need to tell Rosco and Cletus, but Bo reminds him that they are in trouble with them. Luke says there could be something big and it will come down hard and bad on them. Cooter says for them to decide something quick as he recognizes the engine outside meaning Rosco is there. Bo agrees to try it.
Outside Rosco and Cletus yell at each other and Rosco kicks Cletus’ car, knocking off a fender and concluding it’s all the duke’s fault. Bo and Luke come outside and Rosco becomes angry. Cooter tries to calm them down and get Rosco to listen but Rosco refuses. Luke notices a creeper and points it out to Bo. They trip Rosco on the creeper before running off to where the General is. Cletus tries to follow but falls on Rosco. Cooter watches in amusement as Cletus goes to get Rosco’s car and Rosco chases the boys. Out back Rosco watches the boys drive off in the General as Cletus pulls the car around, nearly hitting Rosco. Rosco gets in the passenger seat, and they drive off.
Road
Bo remarks so much for trying to tell Rosco as he drives away from Cletus. Rosco assumes they got him this time, but Cletus rips the steering wheel off, hitting a bunch of mailboxes. Rosco and Cletus freak out as Bo and Luke drive away. They miss being hit by a truck before being stopped. In the General, Bo asks Luke what should they do now say ‘should we go to Boss? Call Roseville? Or What?’ Luke says ‘Or what I guess’ and that they need to keep an eye on Linda May.
Police Department
Boss calls Lulu but in anger he goes to clear things up. He quickly tries to stop her, trying to sweet tell her but instead makes her even angrier. Linda May apologizes for causing problems and Boss assures her Lulu will get over it when she gets hungry again. He shows Lind May a poster to get pictures with Rafe Logan for $10 a piece or 2 for $25. Linda becomes angry, reminding Boss of his promise and Boss says that he just wants to sell a few tickets, making her even more upset.
Balladeer: In case you folks lost your timetable, the hood pal of Linda May is due in Hazzard at 4 o’clock, and Rafe Logan at 5 o’clock. In Hazzard, it’s 3:45. Bo and Luke called Jesse and Daisy to help keep an eye on Linda May, whoever she is.
Road
Denny enters Hazzard County and checks his gun. Rafe taunts the Marshal in the car as they get closer to Hazzard.
Town of Hazzard
Daisy and Jesse arrive in town in Dixie. Bo and Luke are hiding in bushes next to where Daisy parks. The boys explain everything to Jesse and Daisy that they learned. Luke asks if they can talk to Linda May and when Daisy asks where the General is Bo says they used Cooter’s tow truck.
Police Department
While Boss writes down ticket number, Linda May reminds him this is supposed to be an undercover operation. They hear a call from Ken Collins over the CB, asking to use the jail facilities for the night for a prisoner. Linda May agrees before telling Boss that she has to go out and she needs him to give her his word that he will keep quiet about it. Boss gives her his word and when she leaves, he remarks that his word isn’t worth anything. Outside Jesse and Daisy try to talk to Linda May as she comes out, but she brushes them off and leaves. Bo and Luke decide to follow her.
Daisy and Jesse wonder what they will do now and a truck full of chickens pulls up with Cletus and Rosco sitting on the back. Jesse says they need to talk to him, but Rosco brushes him off saying the last thing in the world he wants to see right now is a Duke. Cletus takes a chicken off of Rosco’s head before going inside. Cletus tries to talk to them about the fin and Daisy gets mad. Cletus starts sneezing and gives them the chicken before leaving, ignoring their protests. Jesse is frustrated no one will listen and Daisy tries to calm him and the upset chicken.
Road
Bo and Luke follow Linda May in Cooter’s truck. Luke says he is hoping she will lead them to someone. They see her pull over where a man is waiting and Bo remarks Luke is ‘batting 1000’ today. They pull over to hide in a series of bushes.
Linda May hugs Denny and informs him that she is now the acting sheriff. She also says the Marshal will be arriving with Rafe at 5. Bo and Luke listen closely. Linda May tells Denny that there is a problem with Boss Hogg trying to turn it into a circus. They debate about what to do with Boss when Bo shifts his weight, breaking a stick and alerting the two that they are there. Denny and Linda May pull out their guns on Bo and Luke and Bo claims they are bird watching. Denny decides to kill them but Linda May says they only need the boys out of the way until they are long gone. They decide to cuff Bo and Luke to Denny’s car, one hand to each of the rear-view mirrors. Denny puts the car in neutral and it starts rolling down the hill, forcing Bo and Luke to run backwards with it. Linda May and Denny leaves in the police car.
Luke says they need to slow it down and Bo tells him to think of something as he’s the smart one. Luke says for them to turn and run forwards and they do, seeing they are headed for the lake. Bo says it’s getting faster and they jump into the windows and get in the car. Luke steps on the break as Bo pulls the emergency break and they stop on the edge. Bo says he’s going to church on Sunday, early. Luke comments ‘Amen’ and Bo remarks about Linda May is trying to break out Rafe Logan. Luke and Bo work together to hot wire the car.
Police Department
Cletus putts up a sign about Rafe Logan and Boss has him put up banners. Rosco and Flash show Boss a cup of pieces of steel bar and licorice walkie talkies. Daisy, Jesse, and Cooter come in and are very confused by the whole thing. The three of them try to explain Linda May is a fake but Boss disregard it.
Road
Bo and Luke continue to try hot wring the car.
Police Department
Linda May and Denny arrive. They go inside to see the decorations and the bickering people and both become horrified. They pull out their guns, taking all six hostage and moving them down to the jail below. Daisy rushes over to the CB and is able to relay that they are in trouble to the boys before Denny stops her except Flash who's hiding from them.
Road
The boys called Flash for an answer they move faster on the car. They succeed in getting it started and head to town.
Police Department
Denny puts the group in cells with the exception of Cletus, who he moves to the other side of the room. As the others are locked up, he has Cletus strip of his uniform.
Rafe and Ken arrive and head inside. The Marshal talks to Linda before heading to the bathroom but she knocks him out. Downstairs Denny finishes getting changed, ignoring Cletus who is wrapped in a banner and threatening him about the clothes. Denny threatens them before going up stairs. As soon as Denny is gone, all the people in the cell tell Cletus to get the keys, which Cletus protests he doesn’t have any and he doesn’t have any clothes either.
Town of Haazard
Bo and Luke arrive to see the Marshal’s car is there so they are already too late. Luke tells Bo to go to Cooter’s. They go into the Garage and Bo finds some bolt cutters.
Denny goes upstairs to see Linda May has freed Rafe and the three reunite before heading outside.
Bo and Luke cut themselves free before getting out of the can and removing the cuffs entirely.
Lulu heads toward the Police Department, deciding to make up with Boss as she misses him.
As Bo and Luke head to the Police Department, Rafe and the others come out and see Lulu. They decide to kidnap her and Rafe shoves her in the car. Boss sees what is happening from the prison window and is horrified. Bo and Luke realize they can’t catch the group without the General. They run to the back road where they parked the car and chase off.
Road
In the car, Lulu tells the three who she is. Rafe screams at her, losing patience with her. Bo and Luke catch up and Bo tells Luke not to let go now.
Police Department
Boss tells the others that Rafe has got his Lulu and Rosco assures him that if anyone can get Lulu back it’s the Duke boys. Boss says he hopes so and if anything happens to her, he can’t go on. He says he bad mouths Lulu sometimes, but she sure has a heart of gold. The takes the candy from Rosco to eat it.
Road
Rafe assumes they can dump Lulu. They leave Lulu on the side of the road before driving on. Meanwhile Bo and Luke pass by Lulu and Bo yells they’ll be back to get her. Bo says they need to cut the group off before the county line. The three celebrate their plan but Luke and Bo jump over them, running them off the road. Bo assumes they are out of bullets but they shoot the finale one. Luke says Bo never could count as Bo and Luke knock out Rafe and Denny and Bo pulls Linda May out of the car.
Balladeer: And that’s how them flying Duke boys captured public enemy number two. And Cletus got his pants back. Rosco got his job back, and Boss got his Lulu back. He’s just hoping’ she doesn’t try sneaking back into his bedroom. And with the reward money from the government the dukes got their tractor fixed. So, things in Hazzard was back to normal, which most folks will have to look pretty hard to spot.
Police Department
Rosco and Cletus watch the Marshal take Rafe and the other two away, talking to each one as they pass before pinning each other’s badges on but going to deep and hurting each other. In Boss’ office, he and Lulu celebrate.
Duke Farm
After getting the tractor fixed, Luke takes it for a test drive as Bo, Daisy, and Jesse watch in excitement.

- Jesse is attached to his tractor. This is the second machine of Jesse's that we see him having an attachment to, the first being his racing car Black Tilly.
- This is the second time Luke states that they grew up with Cletus, the first time was in Cletus Falls in Love.
- In this episode the antagonist that everyone is trying to keep in police custody is Rafe Logan, labeled Public Enemy Number Two. In Deputy Dukes, Bo and Luke were trying to transfer and keep Rocky Marlowe, Public Enemy Number One in police custody.
- Also worth noting this is the second time where a woman was pretending to be an officer for the most part of the episode, the previous being in Deputy Dukes with Officer Price.
- The boys remark in this episode that if Cooter knew they needed money he would 'sell his boots' to help them. Cooter backs this statement up by offering to give them his savings when he correctly assumes they are short on money.
- In Nothin' but the Truth when all the Dukes were arrested with an outrageous bail, Cooter had used all his extra money to pay the majority of their bail and passed around a hat to collect the rest.
- Despite the implication in Nothin' But the Truth that Boss only married Lulu for her money, he admits in this episode that he truly loves her and she has a heart of gold.
- Cooter can tell Rosco's car by the sound of the engine.
