"Nothin' But the Truth" is the nineteenth episode of the fourth season of The Dukes Of Hazzard.
Summary[]
Boss Hogg is running a crooked casino in Hazzard County. When the state starts a gambling probe, Boss decides to cover for himself by framing the Dukes for possession of gambling devices. Just as he is about to celebrate his success, Boss accidentally sits on a syringe filled with truth serum -- which Rosco collected along with other police gadgetry while away at a police convention in Atlanta -- and inadvertently injects himself with it. The serum causes Boss to cross his partners by talking too much about the casino, and they will stop at nothing to silence him. In order to clear their names, the Dukes have to get to Boss before his partners can silence him permanently. Boss, under the effects of the truth serum, reveals to Lulu the real reasons why he married her, angering her as well.
Plot[]
Balladeer: Whoa no, I know it looks awful peaceful, that it don’t look much like Hazzard with nobody chasing anybody or nothing. Well friends and neighbors, it’s been that way all week with ol’ Rosco away at the Sheriff’s Convention and Boss Hogg acting almost human. Why even old Cletus, he ain’t given chase to the General once in the whole week. As they say in them old war movies, it’s quiet. Too quiet. Now that’s more like it.
Road
Bo and Luke are driving in the General, Bo whistling. They pass Cletus, who doesn’t give chase. Bo remarks he doesn’t get it, that he keeps driving in and out of Rosco’s favorite speed trap and Cletus just ignores him. Luke says he isn’t’ speeding and Bo says they never used that as an excuse before. Cletus gives chase, surprising them. Bo decides to pull over for once to which Luke says to try it. Bo stops and Cletus pulls over as well. He gets out and greets them. Cletus apologizes for pulling them over and Bo asks what they did. Cletus hands him the rear view mirror saying he stopped it about a half mile back and they might want to hang onto it as they might need it sometime. Surprised, the boys take it and thank him before Cletus leaves. They are further shocked to see a tour bus pass by and assume it’s taking a shortcut.
Olde Hazzard Livery Stable
Balladeer: For the answer to that, y’all gotta look at the Olde Hazzard Livery Stable. Boss Hogg done turned it into a county memorial historical site…and gambling casino.
Alex sits in the car as he watches the tour bus arrive with a number of people going into the busy casino. Boss and his partner talk in the back and Boss gets 30% of the take for the day. Boss gets a call and informs the men that the State Crime Commission on Gambling is looking into Hazzard. Lacey decides for him and his men to pack up but Boss insists he already has a family set up to take the fall.
Road
Bo finished screwing on the mirror, Luke saying Bo nearly put him to sleep. The boys continue driving on. Meanwhile Rosco comes back from the convention in Atlanta with Flash. He radio’s Boss to inform him he’s home and it’s good to be back. Seeing Bo and Luke, Rosco gives chase after them. Bo is actually happy to see him, laughing. Rosco tells Boss he’s following the boys and Boss says if Rosco catches the boys then he will be the new box boy at the all night drive through supermarket and gourmet deli. Boss tells Rosco to cease and Rosco does even though he’s not happy about it. Bo and Luke are confused and alarmed.
Police Department
Rosco puts out a number of samples from the Police Convention in Atlanta on his desk to show Cletus. Rosco show Cletus a radar gun and Cletus nods excited. Rosco also shows him a booklet on training police dogs to sniff explosives and marijuana. Rosco then shows Cletus a needle of sodium pentothal, which he labels a truth serum. Rosco says if you give it to a prisoner they can’t tell a lie. Cletus asks who it works and Rosco tells him to stop interrupting him. Rosco then shows him a set of handcuffs saying they can’t be escaped from. He cuffs Cletus to a desk only to reveal he doesn’t have the key to get them off. Boss arrives and tells Cletus to leave. Cletus explains he’s cuffed to the desk and there is no key so they tell him to take the drawer he is cuffed to with him.
Boss makes Rosco move Flash to use the chair she was in. He then calls Mabel to connect him to the State Crime Commission. Rosco is surprised and Boss explains an investigator is coming to Hazzard and they are going to help them. Rosco gets upset saying he can’t turn in Lacey. Boss says he isn’t going to turn Lacey in and planned to name someone else. Rosco asks who and Boss says the Dukes. Boss explains he is having a casino set up in the barn and in two hours they will catch the Dukes with the investigator.
Duke Farm
The Dukes have a meeting on the farm and Luke comments ‘Murphy’s Law, if everything’s coming your way chances are pretty good you’re in the wrong lane.’ The others are amused and Bo says they figured they should go snoop around. Jesse tells them ‘Jesse’s Law is that you don’t burn your bridges before you come to them’. Jesse says trouble is going to find the boys without them looking for it and there is plenty to do around the farm. He says for the boys to start by going to town and pick up some supplies for him, specifying he needs brown sugar this time. He remarks while they are in town there is no harm in looking around. The boys agree before driving off.
Cooter’s Garage
Cooter is working on Rosco’s car and humming when Rosco tries to rush him as he has to go on a raid. Cooter asks what he’s going to raid, suggesting Boss Hogg’s icebox. Rosco gets upset and says he’s not going to reveal official police business to civilians, baffling Cooter. Rosco goes outside and signals Boss. Boss calls Rosco over the CB. Rosco answers and Cooter listen as Rosco tells Boss they are preparing to raid the Duke Farm in one hour. Cooter tells Rosco his car is done and Rosco leaves. Cooter concludes they are up to something before locking up the garage. Outside Boss and Rosco celebrate Cooter taking the bait.
Martin’s Emporium
Cooter run over to the Emporium as Bo and Luke pack up the supplies. They greet Cooter and Cooter warns them about the raid. Alarmed the boys leave, thanking Cooter.
Livery Stable
The casino keeps running.
Duke Farm
Bo and Luke come flying into the farm before rushing up to the barn. They open it to see a casino set up. Bo asks how that got in there and Luke says with a raid coming in an hour it’s not important as how they are going to get rid of it. Luke calls Jesse and Daisy on the CB and let them know what is going on.
Road
Cletus picks up the investigator from Atlanta and they talk about Cletus being handcuffed to a piece of wood, making the officer concerned.
Duke Farm
Bo, Luke, and Daisy load the equipment under Jesse’s instructions. They are being watched and photographed by Boss and Rosco on the hill. Cletus and Gorman arrive and watch the Dukes load the equipment. They move to take the Dukes. As the family finishes putting a tarp on the truck, they hear sirens. Jesse orders them all to spread out. Bo slides over the hood to the drivers seat of the General as Daisy gets in the pickup. Jesse and Luke finish up before also getting in their vehicles. Jesse and Daisy go one way and Bo and Luke go another. Cletus and the agent go after Daisy and Jesse, pulling them over. Rosco and Boss go after Bo and Luke.
Road
Daisy and Jesse are caught. Bo and Luke go down a road with ‘Falling Rocks’ sign. Luke gets alarmed as a few fall down and Bo assures him he sees it. Bo stops as the road is blocked and Rosco and Boss block them, catching them.
Police Department
Boss, the agent, Cletus, and Rosco hold a trial for the Dukes and charge them with running an illegal gambling hall. Jesse snaps at him for lying and Daisy accuses him of lying. Boss says anyone who continues to talk will be held in contempt of court and be fined $5. Jesse pulled out $5, to Daisy and Cletus amusement, and slams it on the counter before saying that equipment did not belong to them, accidentally stepping on Cletus. Boss says it was in their truck and Luke says that doesn’t mean it belongs to them. Boss decides to add stealing the equipment to the charges. Boss adds that this is also a federal charge. Rosco goes to lock them up and Luke says that they have a right to bail. Boss sets it at $1,000 to which Bo says they can’t afford that. Rosco then locks all four up with Cletus’ help. Gorman assures Boss he will inform the State Crime Commission that everything is resolved in Hazzard. Boss goes into Rosco’s office to sit down, but seeing Flash in the chair again, he sits on the desk. He sits on the needle of truth serum, accidentally injecting it into himself. Boss calls Lacey to tell him everything is fine and heads out to meet him.
In their cell, Luke laments letting Boss get away with it. The Dukes remark that it wasn’t his fault and Bo says it doesn’t matter anyway with the bail set on them. Cooter comes in announcing ‘never fear, bail is here!’ He explains he had some money stored in a sock and he passed around a hat for the rest. People like Mr. Rhuebottom and Ms. Tisdale all contributed to the bail money to get them out.
Livery Stable
Boss picks up his money at the casino. On his way out he sees a man using a slot machine and admits it is crooked. The man storms off and Boss is shocked at himself.
Police Department
The Dukes all leave the station, figuring Boss is running a casino. Luke wonders where the big spenders are coming and they realize the tour buses. Cletus and Rosco watch as the Dukes leave, Bo, Luke, and Daisy in the General and Jesse in his pickup. Rosco tells Cletus to go watch the boys. Cletus hurts his foot getting in the car.
Road
Cletus follows the General while Rosco tries to figure out how much he will be making. In the car, Boss starts admitting to all the bad things he’s ever done to Alex. As they pass a billboard saying Boss’ bank is one you can trust, Boss makes Alex stop to change it to ‘can’t trust’. As he goes back to the car Boss is shocked and asks what just happened.
Bo, Luke, and Daisy wait by the road and see Cletus is still watching them. Bo says if they can distract Cletus then he can take care of Cletus. Daisy finds a swimsuit in the car and Bo and Luke get out to stand in front of the car so Daisy can change. When she’s done Luke helps her out and pretends to take pictures of Daisy on the General, admitting there is no film in the camera. Cletus is captivated and Bo sneaks up to the car, breaking the lug nuts on the tires.
Town of Hazzard
Boss arrives in town and grabs a random man telling him that he never makes a promise he intends to keep. He is horrified and tells the man to forget that but then grabs another saying that whenhe lays his cards on the table he always has another deck up his sleeve. He tells the man to pay no attention and prays to stop saying that before he loses everything he worked so hard to steel.
Road
The Dukes see the tour bus and follow it. Cletus goes to follow after but the front tires fall off. Cletus is stunned before he realizes what happened. Two of Lacey’s men following the bus see the Dukes and conclude they were tailing the bus. They pull up along the General and one points a gun at Bo, telling him to pull over. Luke grabs the wheel, ramming the man before telling Bo to keep moving.
Cletus calls Rosco on the CB and tells him he lost the two front wheels when the Dukes took off after a tour bus. Rosco says if the boys follow that bus then Cletus will be the new soap and sud-er at the Hazzard County Car Wash.
Town of Hazzard
Coming out of the county building, Boss sees a baby and calls it homely before the woman attacks him and Alex takes him away.
Road
The two men following the Dukes start shooting at them and Daisy asks who they are but the boys say they don’t know. Daisy sees a bucket of nails and begins tossing them out onto the road. The man following lose two tries and go into a bush. The boys praise Daisy. Ahead of them, Rosco sees them and blocks the road. Daisy tells them she has no more nails and Bo turns around to lead Rosco through the nails they left on the road. Rosco loses all his tires on the nails and is out but they lost the bus.
Hogg Family Home
Lulu chases Boss outside, furious. Boss tells her that he can only say the truth. Lulu confronts him about things he said, like marrying her for her money, that she is as big as a house, and doesn’t look like she went to the beauty salon. Furious Lulu breaks a pot on Boss’s head before throwing his suitcases out.
Livery Stable
Lacey is informed about the Dukes following the tour bus and decides to go see Boss to deal with them. His men follow.
Boar’s Nest
Rosco sees how upset Boss is, addressing him as fat buddy. When Boss looks at him, Rosco tries to backtrack and Boss says it is the truth, that he is fat, he overeats and will eat anything that don’t eat him first. Trying to cheer him up, Rosco shows him a stuffed fish and Boss admits he didn’t catch it but bought it stuffed and mounted in Atlanta. Boss admits he never admitted to give Rosco his money and Rosco says he should knock him into the middle of next week and Boss admits he can’t stop telling the truth. Rosco says he sounds like the man with the truth serum and Boss says it must have been the needle in his office. Boss tells Rosco to find him an antidote.
Duke Farm
The Dukes look over a map, showing Jesse they lost the bus going west about 17 past Sunset Lake. They all agree to be careful and Jesse goes into the house to get his keys.
Boar’s Nest
Boss calls the IRS, admitting he cheated on his income taxes for the last few years.
Police Department
Rosco reads through the pamphlet for the truth serum and finding no antidote, calls Atlanta to see if they had more information.
Duke Farm
Boss calls Jesse and Jesse starts yelling at him. Boss tells him to stop and he called to admit he pinned the charges on them. Jesse is suspicious but Boss says he accidentally got truth serum and Jesse asks what is he trying to pull. Boss admits he is worried about his partners and agrees to put all this in writing as long as Jesse gets there before Rosco.
Boar’s Nest
Lacey walks in just as Boss tells Jesse to hurry as he has no idea what Lacey would do if he learns what Boss is about to say. Boss hangs up the phone to see Lacey and his men. Lacey confronts him and Boss tries to lie his way out but they pull him out to the casino.
Police Department
Rosco tries calling Boss to let him know what he found out. Not getting an answer at the Boar’s Nest he asks Mable to call Lulu. Lulu is not happy to hear from him and hangs up. Realizing she is upset, Rosco decides to go to the Boar’s Nest. He informs Cletus as he leaves. Cletus continues to try and get the handcuff’s off.
Boar’s Nest
The Dukes arrive and are stunned by how Boss’ office is torn apart. They realize it may be Boss’ new partners. Jesse says Boss can be hurt and Luke tries to call Cletus and tells Daisy and Jesse to go get Cooter and look where they might take Boss and he and Bo will go to the stable. The two rush off as Luke connects to Cletus and fills him in. Cletus agrees to fill in Rosco.
Livery Stable
Boss is tied up in the corner. Lacey tells his men that when it gets dark to put Boss in cement and dump him in the pond.
Road
Cletus calls Rosco over the CB and tells Rosco that Boss was kidnapped. Rosco say that isn’t true and that there is no antidote for the serum and it’s about to wear off. Rosco says to keep an eye out of Boss.
Livery Stable
Bo and Luke arrive at the stable and see the guard. Luke approached him as Bo gets on the roof of the stable. While Luke talks to the guard, Bo drops down on them from behind and knocks the guard out. They look in the back to see Boss with Lacey and his men. Bo proposes they ‘drop in’ and Luke agrees. The two climb to the roof and sneak onto the top floor of the stable. They jump down onto one of the tables, breaking through it and fighting the casino employees. Lacey and his guards hear the commotion and pack up their money. Luke pulls Bo away from the commotion where they hide by the door as Lacey comes out, Bo flirting with a pretty employee and Luke holding another young woman. After Lacey comes out Luke releases the woman and yanks Bo into the back room and Boss is happy to see them. They cut him free. The three of them escape, Lacey spotting them as they get out the door.
Road
Bo shoves Boss in the General as Luke gets it started. Lacey and his men come outside as Bo climbs in and Luke speeds off, shooting after them. Lacey and his men give chase and Boss protests they are going to kill him. Bo calls Jesse and Daisy and asks for help. Jesse says to pick a spot and Luke tells him Clover Crossing in two minutes, which Bo relays. Cooter calls in saying the last one there buys at the Boar’s Nest. Overhearing it, Rosco and Cletus decide to go as well.
Bo hands Boss a piece of paper and a pencil and tells Boss to write out the confession, which Boss does. Lacey starts shooting at them and Bo tells Luke to drive it like he stole it.
Jesse starts coming into Clover Crossing from the east, Daisy from the west, Rosco and Cletus from the south, Cooter from somewhere and the Dukes from the north. Rosco radio’s the boys and tells them to pull it over. Bo hands the CB to Boss and Boss tells Rosco that the boys are trying to save him. All the vehicles converge on Clover Crossing, causing a large pile up and Luke hits a dip, jumping over all the vehicles. Lacey and his men arrive and are forced to stop, being arrested by Rosco and Cletus.
Balladeer: Now you can’t say that when the Dukes set out to bring everybody together that they don’t bring everybody together. And you don’t have to wait no half hour for a tow truck neither. Boss got off the hook by turning states witness against them gamblers, but he really stirred up a hornets nest about his lasts years taxes. And the year’s before that. And where there’s fire, there’s smoke. The Dukes found Lacey’s cashbox and gave all the money to the orphanage fund. And to celebrate they had a BBQ. Now friends, you do tend to eat hardy when you put in the days they do in Hazzard County.

Boss is forced to talk to the IRS about his taxes.
Duke Farm
Bo and Luke BBQ on the grill with Jesse checking on it. Daisy sets the table with Cooter as they wait for all the guests. Jesse remarks where Miz Tisdale would sit, to which Daisy says is right beside Jesse.

- The last time someone tried to introduce a casino in Hazzard was the rolling casino in Route 7-1
- Rosco shows Cletus a radar gun that he got from the Police Convention. Rosco and Cletus previously had pretend radar gun in Pin the Tail on the Dukes
- When Cooter passed around the hat to get the Duke's bail money, many of the citizens chipped in, including Mr. Rhuebottom and Miz. Tisdale.
- Boss tells Lulu in this episode that he married her for her money. However Rosco is established to be very poor, so it is likely that the money is something Lulu earned on her own and has nothing to do with her family.
- Boss admits he has a diary and lies in it. He also is established to lie to Rosco frequently as well.
- At the end of the episode the Dukes donated all the money from the casino to the orphans fund
- In the first episode, One Armed Bandits, the Dukes had used the slot machines to save the orphanage.
Trivia[]
- The 'truth serum' given to Boss in the episode makes him compulsively tell the truth and Rosco was said to get it from a Police Convention in Atlanta. However the idea of using a 'truth serum' was already determined as unconstitutional before the 1960's.
