Paul Baxly

Paul Reginald Baxley Jr. (September 24, 1923 – March 4, 2011) was an American actor and stunt coordinator best known for his work as a stunt coordinator on Star Trek: The Original Series and The Dukes of Hazzard.

Early Life[]

Paul Baxley was born in Casper Wyoming in 1923. Growing up in Los Angeles, he went on to become an all-city quarterback and track star at Eagle Rock High.A Marine, a Scout and Sniper in the 4th Division in World War II, he fought on Kwajalein (Roi-namur), Iwo Jima, Saipan and Tinian. He received Two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, and a letter of commendation from the President of the United States. Taught briefly on Paris Island after the war. After the War, he went back to college and became an all-American quarterback.

Stunt Career[]

Baxley was introduced to the Stunt Coordinator community by Richard Talmadge. Along with Dick and Davey Sharp, the threesome were probably the best all around athletes the industry had ever known. His movie star looks were an obvious fit for doubling some of the biggest stars in Hollywood, among them James Dean, Alan Ladd and Marlon Brando. After working together, he and Marlon became best friends and remained so until Marlon passed away in 2004.

He worked on West Point Story, The Son of Dr. Jekyll, The Crimson Pirate, Iron Mistress, Shane, The Black Knight, and Rebel Without a Cause. He also worked on television on Star Trek and Mike Hammer.

Paul doubled for Marlon Brando, Alan Ladd, Audie Murphy, William Shatner, and Darren McGavin.

The Dukes of Hazzard[]

Paul Baxley's son Craig (The Poseidon Adventure, Canonball, The A Team) and nephew Gary (Predator, Total Recall, R.E.D., Fast Five, Jurassic World) worked on the Dukes of Hazzard with him. Paul was involved from the beginning, coordinating the stunts for all the episodes as well as directing and performing as a stunt double. Paul would continue to work with the series after it's conclusion, coordinating the stunts for both movies, the Dukes of Hazzard Reunion and The Dukes of Hazzard: Hazzard in Hollywood.

The entire cast and crew had high praise to say about working with Paul. John Schneider once said that Paul spoiled them with the stunt work as he hasn't seen anyone who could perform like Paul since[1]. Catherine Bach and Peggy Rae both commented about how he was always such a gentleman to them even addressing them as 'sweetheart'[2].

Personal Life[]

Paul Baxley was the father of stunt coordinator/director Craig R. Baxley, grandfather of Craig Baxley Jr., and the great grandfather of Cash Baxley. His cousin was character actress Barbara Baxley. He was a lifelong Democrat.

Paul Baxley died on March 4, 2011 in Palmdale, California, aged 87.
