"The Great Santa Claus Chase" is the tenth episode of the third season of The Dukes Of Hazzard.

Summary[]

In the series' only Christmas-themed episode; Boss Hogg, who is in an Ebenezer Scrooge-like mood, hires a trio of criminals named Willie (Woody Strode), Russ (Brian Libby), and Hank (Roger Pancake) to hijack a truckload of already-paid-for Christmas trees that Bo and Luke are bringing to Hazzard for needy families, and then pin the blame on the Dukes. The scheme involves Russ and Hank stealing the trees from Bo and Luke at gunpoint, then Willie disguised as a clergyman giving Bo and Luke a lift into town, and then telling them they forgot "their" $500 down payment on the trees. With the town beginning to turn against the Dukes, the Dukes and Cooter race to find the trees and return Hazzard's Christmas spirit. Willie and his two men plot to double-cross Boss by taking more than their payment due on the trees, by breaking into the safe at the Boar's Nest while each one is dressed as Santa Claus. Bo and Luke, with some help from Cooter, decide to take back the trees and have a little fun confusing Rosco and Cletus while delivering the trees dressed as Santa Clauses. It takes a turn toward forgiveness and fellowship as the Dukes and Cooter invite Rosco and Cletus to their Christmas Eve gathering. Boss comes in later, reformed after having read Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.

Plot[]

Balladeer: Friends, you’re looking at a Hazzard County White Christmas, cause that’s as white as it’s gonna get. It was a good time. The crops were in and the cattle were out. It was a time for carols, and words of good cheer. It was a time for giving, that is, except for old Boss Hogg. Of course, he was always in for taking. Well the boys picked up the trees for Cooter and the Scouts. Kind of figures they’d use an orange truck, don’t it?

Town of Hazzard

Daisy arrives in town while Jesse is at the church, conducting the child choir. Boss gives a group of three Santa’s charity baskets and tells them to tug at peoples heart strings and make them give. Jesse goes to the Garage to see Daisy and Cooter and helps with the wreathes. Daisy says it was a good idea for Cooter and the scouts to pre-sell the Christmas trees. Jesse wonders where Bo and Luke are with the trees.

Road

Bo and Luke head to town with a truck of Christmas trees. Bo asks Luke if he got one picked out for Jesse. Luke says it’s in the back and when Bo comments ‘oh that’s real, real smart’ Luke says he tied a ribbon on it. As they drive they see a bag in the road. Bo assumes it was a laundry bag that fell off Cecil’s truck. They go to check it out only to have a man point a gun at them. A second man comes up behind them and they are tied up on the side of the road.

Boar’s Nest

Boss reads through a number of Christmas cards, ripping them up as he does. Rosco sets about decorating the office for Christmas. Boss tells him that he will have total monopoly on the Christmas Trees in Hazzard due to his men hijacking the truck.

Road

The men finish tying up Bo and Luke and leave with the truck. Willie watches them from on the hill through a set of binoculars. Bo starts struggling and asks Luke how he thinks they knew they were coming. The two move to untie each other. The men repaint the truck yellow and switch the plates.

Boar’s Nest

Boss reluctantly helps Rosco, who accidentally nails too far in the wall while putting up decorations. He pulls it out to find that he nailed into the water pipe and water sprays everywhere. Boss uses Rosco’s hat to cover it up.

Road

As Bo and Luke start walking, Willie pulls up in his car. He offers the boys a ride and they agree.

Garage

Hijacked

Bo and Luke explain that they were hijacked

Concerned, Cooter calls A.C. at the Tree Farm and is told the boys left Central City over an hour ago. Boss and Rosco arrives and Boss tells Daisy to go to the Boar’s Nest to clean up the water issue. He asks why they are all so glum and Daisy tells him that Bo and Luke haven’t returned from the tree farm. Outside Willie drops the boys off. The boys go inside to see the others and tell them what happened. As they try to figure out how they got set up, Willie comes in with an envelope before leaving. Boss takes it to see there is about $500 in it. Bo says it isn't theirs but Rosco says Bo and Luke’s name’s were on the envelope. Boss accuses them of being the hijackers. Jesse gets angry at him for the accusation and Boss says to lock the boys up. Bo and Luke run and steal Rosco’s car. Flash climbs up on Bo as he starts to drive. Rosco pulls over a local and uses his car to chase after the boys. Jesse yells at Boss for trying to arrest the boys on circumstantial evidence. Bo and Luke lead Rosco through town and Rosco hits a food stand, saying he’ll have to wash the car later. Luke is amused and Bo is frustrated about stealing the police car. As Bo drives the road is blocked and they slide into a construction vehicle, getting buried under a large pile of dirt. Frantic, Rosco starts digging for Flash, who gets out of the car and barks for him. Rosco hugs his dog, sobbing in relief as Bo and Luke dig themselves out. Rosco arrests them.

Boar’s Nest

Daisy is back at work and is frustrated with a local patron, Lacey, who says that it looks suspicious for Bo and Luke. Boss announces to everyone in the Boar’s Nest that he has a truckload of trees being delivered into town.

Town of Hazzard

Jesse drags Cletus to the police department to get the boys. Cletus says that he’s having his favorite of country fried spaghetti and Jesse says he doesn’t care, he’s got the bail money and he wants to boys. Cletus agrees and says he’s surprised at the boys and Jesse scolds him saying he knows Bo and Luke wouldn’t steal anything.

Boar’s Nest

Willie notices the amount of money in Boss’ safe as he’s being paid and remarks Boss is paying quite a bit for Christmas trees. Boss says when they figure he is disgracing the Dukes, sending them to jail, and adding in the money he’s going to make; it’s cheaper at triple the price.

Town of Hazzard

Willie picks up Hank and Russ and expresses that their next job will be stealing the safe in Boss’ office. He tells them he’s going to take them to the Boar’s Nest as he has some shopping to do in Central City. Bo, Luke, and Jesse exit the Court House, apologizing to Jesse for the bail money but Jesse says it wouldn’t be much of a Christmas with them in jail. Bo remarks he doesn’t know who to feel more sorry for, them or the people without trees. Luke sees the truck and tells Bo to feel sorry for them as the people with the trees will get some after all. The three go to look at the truck as Luke thinks it looks familiar. They find the tree that they set up for Jesse and realize it was the truck stolen from them. Luke tells Jesse to go to his choir practice and they’ll see if they can get Boss to sing too. Jesse tells them not to do anything foolish as he’s running out of bail money.

At the Church, Jesse sees only Otis J. Otis tells him that no one is willing to let their kids sing for a Duke right now and he was the one forced to come tell Jesse. He offers to sing with Jesse anyway and Jesse decides instead they should go to the pharmacy and get some hot chocolate.

Boar’s Nest

Boss sits in his office, calculating how much the ‘Hogg Merchandise Mart and Boutique, Hogg’s Greeting Card Printing Company, and Hogg’s Mistletoe and Tinsel Works’ among other businesses will make for the season. Rosco asks how much he’s going to charge for the trees and Boss says three times the normal price. Bo and Luke arrive and they ask Daisy if Boss is there. Daisy confirms it, causing Bo to lose a bet with Luke over 10 gallons of gas. Boss is alarmed when the boys storm into his office, slamming his money box closed. Luke asks for the bill of sale for the trees. Boss says everything he does is fair and square. Bo challenges him and Rosco on that and that they know the trees were the one’s stolen from them. Boss threatens to sue them for deformation of character and Bo says he has no character to defame. Boss sends them out and Bo and Luke go to the bar. Boss tells Rosco to keep an eye on them as they know too much.

Bo and Luke get a drink from Daisy and she tells them everyone is starting to believe they were the hijackers. The phone rings and Luke notices Hank answer it. Willie tells them to meet him at an old shack out on Route 71 near Hobson’s creek. Luke recognizes his watch on Hank's wrist as the same watch one of the hijackers was wearing. As the men leave Bo says Luke will think of something. Luke tells them about the watch and Daisy watches Bo and Luke leave. Rosco and Boss come out of Boss’ office and Rosco asks where Bo and Luke are off to. Daisy tells him they are doing his job. Boss sends Rosco to go after them. Bo and Luke chase the hijackers and Rosco chases them. As the three cars come one way, a pie truck is coming another way. Russ and Hank go around, Bo is forced to jump over a truck using it’s ramp and Rosco hits the pie truck, getting covered in pies. Russ and Hank manage to get away.

Duke Farm

The Dukes have lunch and Daisy remarks it isn’t going to be much of a holiday with jail hanging over the boys and no money for presents. Jesse comments about the Scrooge Hogg making people buy Christmas Trees again. Luke gets something from the fridge but gets an idea. He tells the others about reenacting ‘Christmas Carol’ and Bo says that Boss takes a nap every afternoon at 4:30. Jesse asks where are they going to get ghosts. Bo, Luke, and Daisy all three make noises like ghosts and Jesse say ‘this might work’.

Boar’s Nest

Rosco wraps Flash’s gift for Christmas. Boss says he must be dumber than a rock to buy a Christmas present for a dog. He sits down to take a nap and Rosco points out he’s eating one of Flash's Christmas presents while heading out. Bo listens in and makes sure that Boss is there and alone before waving over Luke and Daisy. Luke goes to force open the door but Daisy shows them it’s unlocked. Daisy goes inside to turn on the C.B. before returning to the boys. Luke then talks into a jug to make his voice echo like a ghost, identifying himself as the ghost of Christmas Past over the C.B. Luke addresses Boss, saying he is the meanest, stingiest, crookedness man in Hazzard and Boss agrees. Luke says that the only thing he’s ever given during Christmas is measles. Bo and Daisy try to keep from laughing too much. Daisy takes the jug and the mike and tells Boss that she is the Ghost of Christmas Future. She says that his future doesn’t look too bright and he’ll need headlights to see where he’s going. Boss starts sobbing in fear and Bo takes the jug and mike saying he is the Ghost of Christmas Present. He tells Boss to change his ways. He nearly convinces Boss to give the trees, despite Daisy and Luke losing it while Bo is talking. However Cooter comes over the C.B. calling them and alerts Boss to what is really going on. Boss turns off the C.B. and hears the Dukes fleeing out the back. He yells that he knew it was them and he just played along.

Cabin

Willie arrives with his packages and tells Russ and Hank to give him a hand.

Duke Farm

Jesse sits in the living room while Daisy, Luke, Bo, and Cooter have coffee. Cooter apologizes and says he didn’t know what they were up to. They say he had no way of knowing and Bo remarks tomorrow is Christmas Eve. Cooter says they are going to take the money back in the morning and Luke protests saying people bought those trees and they are going to get them. When asked how, Luke says they are going to get them like Boss did. Jesse tells them that they know how he feels about stealing and Luke says they are just going to relocate the trees to their rightful owners.

Cabin

Willie and the others plan to rob Boss on Christmas Eve. Willie explains they will all be dressed as Santa Claus.

Garage

Bo, Luke, and Cooter go over the routes for the tree deliveries, Bo saying the Anderson’s is the last stop on his route. Cooter asks how they will deliver the trees without being recognized. Luke says they are all going to be dressed like Santa Claus. Bo points out that if they try and take the trees from the center of town, Rosco will catch him. Luke says the trick is going to be making them think they are were they ain’t. He says they will need three of the same model and color pickup. Cooter says he’ll call Alpine Construction Company as Murphy will fix them up. Bo still doubts it and Cooter says it’ll take a miracle. Luke says it's the time of year for them. Bo, Luke, and Cooter go and get the Santa suits from Boss’ charity men. Cooter gets changed as Bo and Luke pull out smoke bombs.

Bank

Bo and Luke get changed before dropping smoke bombs in the bank. Boss and Rosco come out to see the smoke and Rosco runs to the Fire Department as Boss runs to the Bank. Boss goes inside to see it was just a smoke bomb. Meanwhile, Bo and Luke take the tree truck and Cooter drives by in the pickup truck to make Boss and Rosco assume it is their only vehicle. Rosco chases after them. However Cooter chained his car to a fire Hydrant, damaging Rosco’s car. Cletus arrives in Town and nearly crashes into the truck as Bo and Luke leave. Cletus is stopped by a ladder and Boss and Rosco run over and yell at him. Cletus asks what are they talking about and Rosco explains Santa Claus stole Boss’ trees. Shocked Cletus asks ‘Santa Claus did’ and Boss says it wasn’t the real Santa before asking what is he saying. He tells them both to find the Santa.

Road

Cletus sets out to cover the north and west and Rosco and Boss get in Boss car to look. Willie and his men head to the Boar’s Nest. Bo, Luke, and Cooter stash the truck and start loading the pickups.

Balladeer: Just so you all don’t get all muddled, Santa Cooter’s in Pickup A, Santa Bo’s in Pickup B, and Santa Luke’s in Pickup C. Now you better stay alert because it could get a little bit puzzling, which is exactly what it’s supposed to do to Boss, Rosco, and Cletus.

While out driving Cletus spots a truck going East on Mill Rode. Boss and Rosco says they’ll nail him when the road intersects with 71. As they drive another truck comes up behind him and passes. Bo yells ‘Merry Christmas’ to him as he does. Boss yells at Cletus saying the Santa is going North. Cletus gets confused. Cooter turns around and goes the other direction, confusing Cletus more. Bo delivers a tree to the church.

Boar’s Nest

Jesse sits with Daisy as she counts the registers and remarks he has a feeling he should have gone along to help. Daisy says not to get too worked up about it. She says if Bo and Luke need help they know where he is. The three Santa’s come inside.

Road

Luke delivers a tree to a family. Boss and Rosco stop to look around. Cooter calls Luke, using the handles Dancer to Blitzen and says he needs help. Luke says he’s on his way. While Rosco and Boss try to figure out where to go, Luke passes by (nearly losing his disguise while trying to taunt them) and they follow him.

Boar’s Nest

Willie and his men start breaking into the safe after locking Jesse and Daisy in a closet.

Road

Luke rings the door bell at Otis J.’s and gives him and his family a tree. He tells Otis he’ll see him around midnight before leaving. Cletus drives around and calls Boss to tell him he lost the Santa. Boss tells him that the Santa is headed west at Piker’s Ridge. Cletus goes to move but sees a second truck. As he looks again he sees another truck and asks Boss to come get him as he’s lost.

Boar’s Nest

The three empty out the safe and leave. Jesse and Daisy hear them and break down the closet door, with Jesse remarking that Bo and Luke will be behind bars for 10 years if the hijackers make it across the county line. They chase after the crooks and while Daisy drives Jesse gets her coat. Bo and Luke reload their trucks for their rounds as Cooter pulls off the road and Bo leads him away. Jesse helps Daisy get on her coat. Boss and Rosco fight about who lost the Santa’s. Jesse calls the others to tell them he needs them at Indian Road. Rosco and Boss see a car pass with three Santa’s in it and realize that there are multiple. Boss tells Rosco to follow them, getting in line before Daisy in the chase. Rosco calls Cletus to tell him to head to Bear’s Hollow. Bo, Luke, and Cooter have meanwhile all finished their rounds and head toward Bear’s Hollow. All seven vehicles meet up and Cletus pulls out the three in the car.

Balladeer: Well, Boss had a mighty tough decision to make. He could order Rosco to arrest the three Santas who had stole his trees... that he had stolen from them. Or he could order the arrest of the three who had stolen the trees that had just been stolen from him, after he had stolen, uh… Well, you get the idea. What really made up Boss’ mind was Jesse showing him the stacks of money that had been stolen from Boss’ safe, while he was off chasing Bo, Luke, and Cooter. And so, all Charges against the Dukes were dropped. Christmas Eve came to Hazzard. That is, everywhere in Hazzard, but the Boar’s Nest.

Boss pulls off all six Santa’s beards and has Rosco and Cletus arrest the three crooks, reclaiming his money from the Boar’s Nest.

Boar’s Nest

Rosco and Boss are at the Boar’s Nest and Boss opens the present from Rosco. Rosco says Ms. Perkins at the book store said ‘A Christmas Carol’ was a classic. Boss puts the book down and offers for him and Rosco to get some beer. Rosco says he would love to but he is going to the Duke Farm because even after all that happened, the Dukes got Flash a present. Rosco wishes him a Merry Christmas and shakes his hand before leaving.

Balladeer: And with Lulu away, old Boss was as lonely as old Waylon on the night of the Country Music Association Awards. Boss began to read about old Ebenezer Scrooge, the meanest, stingiest, uncaringness person in the whole wide world. He read about what Scrooge had done to his former partner Marley, to Bob Cratchit, and of course to Tiny Tim. He read about the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present, and the Ghost of Christmas Future.

Boss goes to leave but decides to read the book from Rosco. Shocked at what he reads, he decides to do something different.

Duke Farm

Christmas-0

Everyone greets Boss

Jesse, Daisy, and Cletus finish setting up the table, Daisy slapping Cletus hand from the food. Bo and Luke decorate the tree with Cooter as Rosco and Flash sit on the floor. They all sing Silent Night. Jesse answers the door to see Boss, under a stack of presents. Boss asks if he can join them and Jesse happily invites him in. Everyone greets him and Boss wishes them all a Merry Christmas. Daisy decides to sing Deck the Halls and everyone sings until Jesse hears bells. He asks if they boys put bells on Maudine and they deny it.
