"The Revenge of Hughie Hogg" is the thirteenth episode of the fifth season of The Dukes Of Hazzard.
Rosco is up for re-election, and Boss Hogg has no problem whatsoever supporting Rosco -- until Boss Hogg's nephew Hughie Hogg (Jeff Altman) returns to Hazzard to run against Rosco for sheriff. Hughie blackmails Boss into helping Hughie by showing Boss some evidence of a crooked deal that Boss made involving more than $10,000 worth of stolen telephone answering machines -- the man who stole them wants Boss to fence them. Knowing that Hughie would be a lot worse than Rosco, the Dukes campaign to get Rosco re-elected. However, since Hughie never plays fair, he has Boss suspend Rosco, and try to arrest the Dukes. The Dukes have to get creative and find a way to outsmart Hughie so they can get Boss back on Rosco's side, and stop Hughie from getting elected.
Balladeer: There’s supposed to be only two things certain in life. Death and taxes. But in Hazzard County, there’s two more. The Dukes being chased by Sheriff Rosco is one, and the other strange things happenin’ during elections. Which is how this all started. Will Rogers once said that he never met a man that he didn’t like. Well, old Will had never met Boss Hogg or Boss’ lowlife nephew Hughie Hogg. What do you reckon all them electronic gizmatics is? Are?
Daisy, Coy, and Vance ride in the General when they notice Rosco and Enos are chasing them. Coy wonders what they want since they are ten under the speed limit. Vance and Daisy want to outrun them but Coy suggests stopping. They all do, and surprised at the fact the Dukes stopped, Enos hits Rosco’s fender. The boys get out of the car with Daisy, pleading their case that they did nothing wrong. Rosco quickly assures them all that he’s not giving them a ticket. He says he knows he hasn’t been the best friend to them but he wants their vote. Flash hands them a flier to vote for Rosco to the Dukes’ amusement. Rosco asks Daisy to put up a poster before giving all three Duke kids a cigar and Enos tries to give Rosco a button. The officers driver away, showing Enos is now stuck on Rosco’s car. The Dukes are even more amused because there is no one running against Rosco.
Boss meets with a man, paying him off for telephone machinery in a hijacked truck. Boss is unaware that Hughie, Barclay, and Norris are nearby, recording the entire thing. Boss closes out the deal with 2,500 but the hijacker complains that there is over $10,000 of answering machines there. Boss says that would be legitimate and they aren’t in the legitimate business. The man relents, taking the money. Hughie concludes they have enough evidence.
Hughie and the others are driving on the road when they see the General. Deciding to mess with the Dukes since he had his bug souped up, Hughie tries to run them off the road. Daisy notices them first, to her surprise. Hughie accidentally spins out, wrecking his own car. The Dukes wonder why Hughie is back in town.
Hughie, Barclay, and Norris come into Boss’ office. Boss is surprised to see him but happily greets him as his ‘no good nephew’. They greet by stealing from each other’s pockets before returning the stolen items. Boss however suddenly remembers the last time Hughie was in Hazzard and reminds him that he was told to never come back. Hughie says he has an ‘or else’ and shows Boss the evidence he gathered. Boss tries to take it but Hughie gets it back. Hughie tells Boss that he wants him to withdraw his support for Rosco in the upcoming election and back him instead. Boss is shocked and protests against it. With the evidence Boss caves and agrees.
Boss goes outside to where Rosco is driving around the square. Boss calls him over but Rosco stops to give a little girl a lollypop before remembering that the girl can’t vote. He gives the lollypop to the girls mom before kissing the girls head. He then tells Boss he’s glad this only happens once every four years. Boss informs him that he is withdrawing support, upsetting Rosco. Rosco is even more horrified that it is to back Hughie. Boss tries to assure Rosco that this hurts him more than Rosco and informs Rosco he can’t campaign in his vehicle either.
Barclay and Norris go around town, removing Rosco’s campaign items and replacing them with Hughie’s. The Dukes drive around town, surprised to see it. Vance calls Jesse on the C.B. and fills him in on what they learned. The Dukes agree they can’t let Hughie become Sheriff and Jesse tells the kids to back Rosco in the election. Since Cooter is out of town, they decide to use the Garage.

Furious that Boss has withdrawn his support of Rosco, Lulu refuses to allow him to eat his lunch while she lectures him. Lulu tells Boss until he supports Rosco, he will have to find a new place to eat and sleep. Boss protests as Lulu takes his food. He chases after her into the kitchen but she throws dough at him and Boss eats it, saying there is nothing you can’t get from a woman if you sweet talk.
Rosco drives up to the Hazzard Garage in his personal car where the four Dukes are waiting for him. As he goes to get out, the door falls off followed by the fender. He gets annoyed when the Dukes laugh and he asks what they want. Jesse says the Dukes are going to back Rosco in the election to Rosco’s surprise and joy. Meanwhile Barclay and Norris overheard.
Hughie works on his campaign with three women wearing shirts that read ‘we want Hughie’. Barclay and Norris come in and inform Hughie what they learned. Hughie tells them that they need to get rid of the Dukes until after the election. The three women are not amused about Hughie’s declarations.
Coy and Vance are driving around in the General when they stop to put up a poster for Rosco. Coy says he never thought he’d see the day they were helping Rosco. Vance corrects him, saying they are helping themselves. They are surprised when Barclay and Norris, wearing masks, ambush them. Vance distracts them by tossing a hammer at Barclay. Coy and Vance fight them off and flee in the General. Barclay and Norris chase after the boys but can’t keep up. They try to cut the boys off but instead jump the car and wreck it. Coy and Vance conclude they work for Hughie.
Daisy and Jesse campaign for Rosco in the town square, talking to the citizens of Hazzard. Hearing Vance on the C.B., Jesse goes to his truck and listens to Vance fill him in.
Hughie goes over Boss’ files with him, informing him that when he becomes Sheriff he will be taking 70% of all of Boss Hogg’s operations. Norris and Barclay come in and inform Hughie of their failed attempt to kidnap the Duke’s. Hughie suggests Boss has Rosco arrest Coy and Vance. Boss points out Rosco wouldn’t be stupid enough to arrest his campaign runners. Hughie says if that is the case then for Boss to fire Rosco and make him acting Sheriff. Boss reluctantly agrees.
The Dukes and Lulu hold a campaign meeting for Rosco. Daisy introduces Lulu, who makes a speech on Rosco’s behalf. After Daisy introduces Jesse, who speaks on behalf of Rosco. While he talks Boss, Hughie, Norris, and Barclay sneak in. They call Rosco over and Boss tells Rosco to arrest the Dukes. Rosco asks for what and Boss comes up with a fake charge, making enough of a racket to get everyone’s attention. When Rosco refuses again, Boss publicly suspends him and swears in Hughie, who swears in Barclay and Norris. The Dukes are furious and Hughie orders the Dukes arrest. Daisy knocks over a stack of tires, Lulu drops a banana peel, and Jesse tears down a banner, taking down Norris and Barclay and allowing the Dukes to escape. Coy drives the General as Daisy and Jesse drive their cars. Rosco helps distract them for a few moments to give the Dukes a head start. Barclay and Norris manage to get free and a chase goes around the Hazzard square. Barclay and Norris hit a phone booth with a woman inside talking on the phone. She continues talking as if she never noticed despite the booth being pushed into the street.
They chase continues out of down. The Dukes approach tri-corners and the Dukes all split up. Barclay and Norris decide to follow the General. Vance says for them to hope Snuffy is still working today. They call him on the C.B. and Snuffy agrees to hold up Barclay and Norris by crane to allow the boys to escape.
Rosco drives around the town square in his car, complaining the entire time. He stops outside of the county building, knocking on the car only to knock the bumper off. Angry he kicks it again, knocking loose another fender. Hughie approaches him, giving him a $150 fine for littering. In anger Rosco kicks his car again and a third fender comes off, Hughie increasing the fine.
Inside his office, Boss is trying to think of a way to stop Hughie. Boss comes up with a plan and runs outside where Rosco is singing for his fine. As Hughie leaves, Rosco yells that he hates him. Boss comes running out and approaches Rosco. He tells Rosco that he has a confession to make to him and informs Rosco about a deal he made that he was going to cheat Rosco out of to begin with. Boss says he wants to get Rosco his badge back but he needs Rosco to steal the blackmail material. They go to get in Rosco’s car but all the doors, the last fender, and the back bumper all fall off.
The Dukes talk and Daisy suggests that maybe it’s Boss who needs help. They all agree and decide to find Boss.
Boss and Rosco see Hughie getting a shave at the barber’s shop. Boss tells Rosco to go get the blackmail from Hughie’s coat. Rosco is very reluctant but goes in, convincing the barber to let him look through Hughie’s pockets. Rosco finds it but Hughie reveals he was aware of Rosco’s presence, pulling a gun on him. Boss is horrified when Rosco gets arrested and flees.

Lulu is furious and chasing Boss out of their home when the Duke’s arrive. Lulu invites them in as she continues yelling at Boss, revealing that Rosco has been arrested. While they talk Hughie and Barclay arrive. Hughie says he will arrest them all but Lulu and Jesse enable Vance and Coy to escape. Norris and Enos attempt to cut them off but Vance brings the car up on two wheels to get by. They talk about what to do now and Vance says they need to get whatever Hughie has on Boss Hogg.
Coy and Vance return to town, sneaking over to the jail. Inside, Hughie tells Barclay to go put an APB on Coy and Vance. He then instructs Norris to ensure Daisy is comfortable in the cell he put her and Jesse in. Meanwhile Vance and Coy get a skunk and sneak it into the station.
Hughie hears scratching outside and when Norris and Barclay come back. He asks if they heard that and the two correct it saying they smell something. They conclude there is a skunk in the station. The three men flee the station and Coy and Vance go in before freeing Rosco, Jesse, and Daisy.
Rosco rides with the Dukes I the General and informs them what Hughie has. Vance suggests they put Hughie in a position where he has to hand it over and Daisy volunteers since Hughie still has a crush on her. Vance agrees to the idea but Jesse refuses. Daisy tells him that if Hughie even lays a hand on her she will ‘knock him flat on his butt—ermilk pancakes.”
Daisy puts a tape recorder in her purse before going into the Sheriff’s office to see Hughie. Daisy claims to be turning herself in and Hughie immediately falls for her flirting. Daisy leads him around the desk, suggesting maybe they go swimming or something together. She tells him first she wants to know more about him and suggests he tells her stories about how he made all the money he has. Hughie starts falling over himself as he brags to her about his crimes. He then asks her for a kiss and Daisy flips him onto the ground before leaving.
Daisy plays the tape for Vance, Coy, and Jesse in the General. They all realize that the tape recorder got turned off when Hughie put a hand around her. Vance suggests that Hughie doesn’t know he turned it off and maybe they can use it to bluff him.
Rosco fills Boss in on the situation and Boss is upset that the Dukes could use Hughie’s tape against him. Rosco suggests they get the tape the Duke’s made and trade it to Hughie for his tape. Boss says that is a good plan and they get into Boss’ car to go find the Dukes.
Vance calls Hughie from the Duke Farm and plays the tape up until it cuts out over the phone. He asks if Hughie heard enough and they agree to a swap at the Morgan Glueworks, the mainline switch in an hour. Vance hangs up and when Coy asks what next, Vance says they worry a lot. Meanwhile Hughie plans to double cross them.
The boys head to the Glueworks while Boss and Rosco head out to stop them. They pass each other on the road and chase after the Dukes. Vance theorizes they want to take the tape so Coy decides to run from them. Ahead on the road a truck taking a load of beer loses it’s load on the road. Coy swerves to avoid the barrels on the road but they force Rosco to stop. When the boys pass the truck, they let the driver know he lost his load. The boys come across three women, the three with Hughie’s campaign, standing on the side of the road. They stop and Hughie, Barclay, and Norris come out of the bushes to claim the tape from them. Coy gives it to them but they knock Barclay, Norris, and Hughie down so they can escape. Hughie lets them go.
In the car Coy is upset about giving Hughie the tape but Vance tells him that the tape given was blank and he’s got Daisy’s tape in his pocket. Meanwhile Hughie discovers it is indeed blank.
The Dukes gather at the farm and Vance calls Hughie over the C.B. Vance says for them to meet the Dukes at Morgan’s Glueworks in fifteen minutes.
Boss and Rosco overhear the call and head to the Glueworks.
Jesse says he doesn’t think they can bluff again and the boys say they aren’t going to, that is why they are taking Daisy. All three say goodbye and leave, prompting Jesse to remark that he sure doesn’t want to be Hughie Hogg.
Vance, Coy, and Daisy arrive at the glueworks. Hughie and the others are already there. Coy climbs up on the building while Vance and Daisy go inside. Hughie tells them he wants to hear the tape all the way through before he agrees to the trade. Daisy asks that he wants to hear all the crimes and Vance starts recording a different tape while Daisy leads him through admitting to the various crimes he told her about and Hughie adds a few that he didn’t say before. Vance tells him that they didn’t have that before, but they do now and shows Hughie the new tape.
Boss and Rosco come in, saying that is what they were waiting for. Boss says this ends all the negotiations and asks for the table. Angry Hughie hands it to Boss. Boss tells Rosco that he is to arrest Hughie for blackmailing him, then arrest the Dukes for blackmailing Hughie. Norris and Barclay come in and claim both tapes. However they also take Hughie’s gun saying they have decided they are going off on their own now.
Coy jumps down from the loft, knocking over barrels that coats everyone in black goop. Vance and Coy take down Norris and Barclay. Boss and Rosco manage to get up but find they are glued together. Barclay and Norris escape. Coy and Vance follow them in the General.
Vance tells Coy to chase them up Stomp Hollow Road and they do down the road and a pond. The tapes and photos get destroyed.
Balladeer: Well Coy and Vance got them bad guys out, but the tapes and snapshots were gone forever, along with the patrol car that Boss made Rosco pay for. Once Rosco got reelected and got back his badge and Boss got Lulu back which didn’t seem really fair. Lulu hadn’t done anything wrong. Boss got Lulu’s permission to break camp on their front lawn and move back into the house. Hughie and his double crossing cohorts were told to leave town and never return but being family, old Hughie and Boss shared one final embrace. All of which ended a pretty normal election in Hazzard county.
