"Witness: Jesse Duke" is the eighteenth episode of the fifth season of The Dukes Of Hazzard.

Summary[]

Boss Hogg is trying to buy gas pumps from a crook named Hanson (Noble Willingham) -- gas pumps that would severely overcharge whoever buys gas from Boss Hogg's stations. Jesse is blinded by a blow to the face while trying to stop a bank robbery in Capitol City, and his eyesight might not return. The robbers, Parker (Judson Scott) and his accomplice Rick (Billy Streater), do not want any witnesses, so they go to Hazzard County to track Jesse down, planning to kill him. Coy, Vance, and Daisy decide to hide Jesse at Boss Hogg's house while they try to stop Parker and Rick.

Plot[]

Balladeer: Now y’all watch, ‘cause this one is different. It all started on a Monday morning, the Duke boys and Daisy were headed to town to Rhuebottom’s store with a shopping list of staples. And Jesse was on his way to Capitol City Bank to take out a farm loan to buy some new equipment for spring planting.

Road

The General Lee is driving down the road with Daisy, Coy, and Vance while Jesse follows in the pickup. As they come up on an intersection, Jesse radio’s them saying this is where he leaves them and he’ll see them at the farm in a few hours. He tells the boys to be good and Daisy promises to watch them, even threatening Vance if he drives a single mile per hour over 55. Jesse is amused while Vance says that is blackmail. Coy remarks it’s a shame he’s got to go over to Capitol City, but Vance says he can’t get one from Boss Hogg with his interest rates.

Police Department

In Boss’ office, he meets with Hanson. Hanson demonstrates a gas pump he brought with them, pumping out ten gallons of gas. However he pours the gasoline from the barrel into a glass, showing that instead of ten gallons, it only pumped out ten ounces. Hanson offers to sell Boss two dozen saying it will take a month for Boss to make back what he spent, which is fifty thousand. The two negotiate back and forth, settling on twenty. They agree to half now and half later, to which Rosco remarks that he enjoys these exchanges. Tired, Boss goes to drink from the glass before remembering it is gasoline and putting it down. He gets out ten thousand and hands it over. Hanson cautions him that if Boss does not arrive at the agreed meeting time and place, he will leave and take the money with him as compensation. Hanson leaves and Boss and Rosco celebrate the sale. Rosco wonders what he will get and Boss says he will get to pump the gas, upsetting Rosco.

Bank of Capitol City

Jesse arrives at the bank and starts heading inside. A woman drops a number of packages so Jesse stops to assist outside of the jewelry store. Two masked men exit the store, the alarms sounding and collide into the old woman and Jesse. They throw the woman down and Jesse seizes the one, managing to pull his mas off his face. The store owner yells for help and the thief in alarm, hits Jesse hard and knocks him down and unconscious. By standers run over as the thieves leave, a woman comforting the older woman and a few men checking on Jesse. They call for an ambulance.

Duke Farm

Daisy, Vance and Coy are unpacking the groceries when they get a phone call. Daisy answers the phone and Dr. Talmadge informs her that Jesse was involved in an accident and is currently at the hospital. Daisy becomes upset and Vance takes the phone from her. The Doctor tells Vance about the robbery that Jesse was wrapped up in and that Jesse now has a concussion. The Doctor explains that Jesse can’t see which sends Daisy into hysterics and Coy tries to console her while Vance talks to the doctor. They cut the doctor off on the call, announcing they need to go to the hospital.

Cave

Parker and Rick celebrate their haul. Parker adds the only problem was the old man who got a good look at him. Rick says they only need to worry about Jesse if he’s alive since he hit his head pretty hard.

Road

The Dukes tear off down the road with Coy driving. They cut through a couple of farms and go off country. They speed by Enos, upsetting him as he realizes they really are speeding. Coy notices Enos behind them but Vance says they don’t have time for them. Enos asks them to pull over and Vance explains what happened. Enos becomes upset but offers to go with them. Vance declines as Enos is an officer and Enos stops, praying in his car for Jesse’s safety.

Up ahead, Daisy tells Coy to cut through the railroad yard as it will save them ten minutes. They agree but a train is currently going through. Coy jumps the train.

Cave

Rick and Parker listen to the radio and learn that the witness, named Jesse Duke, has been hospitalized. They also learn Jesse was blinded and not likely to regain his eyesight. Parker wants to kill Jesse anyway since he can still describe him.

General Hospital

Vance, Daisy, and Coy arrive at the hospital and go to see Jesse, who is sitting in a chair with a blindfold across his face. Upset, Daisy rushes to him and hugs him but Jesse smiles and tells her to calm down as the boys reach them. Jesse says it’s not as bad as it looks before calling for Coy, but turns to Vance instead, then calling for Vance. The boys just say they are there. Jesse laughs and he tells the kids he isn’t hurt. Jesse claims it’s only temporary but the doctor looks uneasy. He gestures for Vance and Coy to come talk to him and the three step into the hall. Daisy comes too and he explains that Jesse is unlikely to ever see again. Now that Jesse is discharged, the kids go to take him home. Vance and Coy say when they find the guys who did this, they are going to wish they were never born but Jesse scolds them. Jesse teases them about driving back to Hazzard himself.

Police Department

Boss gets a call from his partner, telling him where and when to pick up the gas pumps. Rosco tries to eat peanuts by tossing them into the air, but Boss keeps grabbing them and eating them before Rosco can. The agreement is to meet at Miller’s Crossroads the next day at four. Enos comes charging in as Boss hangs up and informs them about Jesse’s accident. Boss becomes alarmed and horrified. Rosco is shocked and Boss says they need to go out to the Duke Farm and offer their assistance. Enos says he spoke to Daisy and they aren’t’ accepting visitors today. Boss says they will go first thing tomorrow. Boss says they can bring Boss some pie.

Duke Farm

While everyone is in bed, Jesse tries to get around the kitchen. He bumps into a table and Daisy comes out to see what is going on, followed by the boys. Jesse moves around the living room, felling around when he senses the kids and calls out to them. He says he knows what they are thinking and he loves them for it. He remarks the things he misses and says if he never sees again at least he’s seen things. Daisy insists he will see again and the boys try to assure him too. Jesse says with or without him the kids are going to have to keep the farm running and sends them back to bed. Daisy runs to him instead and hugs him, saying he’s going to be fine. Jesse says he knows that and Daisy kisses him before going back to bed.

After closing her bedroom door and the boys leave, Jesse holds some pictures. In her bed, Daisy prays to god and begs him to allow Jesse to see again. She starts crying as she continues to pray and once she finishes her prayer she turns out the light.

The next morning, Vance is reading a newspaper article about Jesse to the others over breakfast. Jesse had said in the paper that he would identify the crooks as soon as he gets his sight back. Coy expresses happiness at it, but Vance is angry saying that if the two crooks read that they will come looking for Jesse. Daisy becomes alarmed and Coy offers to call the state police but Vance says he already thought about that. Jesse calls them to say good morning and declines any offer to help He gets to the table, identifies breakfast by smell, and they all happily start eating.

Road

Rick and Parker, having seen the paper, call the Duke Farm. Daisy answers and they ask if she can let them speak to Jesse. Parker pretends to be a writer who wants to do a piece on Jesse for his paper. Jesse politely declines and Parker hangs up, telling Rick that Jesse is at his home and they need to go get him. Rick asks to leave it but Parker insists.

Duke Farm

Jesse praises Daisy’s cooking while her and Coy do the dishes. Vance and Jesse both have coffee and Vance asks if Jesse would like to come into town. Jesse is confused, asking why and Vance tries to say he and Coy promised Mr. Rhuebottom that they would stock the shelves. Daisy adds that she has to get the Boar’s Nest ready for a party. Jesse says that they should get to it then and Vance says they can’t leave him alone. While the boys argue with Jesse, Daisy goes to get his hat and puts it on him saying it’s finale. Jesse is surprised but agrees, letting Daisy help him out.

Road

Jesse rides upfront in the General and asks what they expect him to be doing. Vance admits he lied and Jesse asks what is going on. All three start explaining and Jesse cuts them off. They explain they really love and care about them and they were worried for his safety. Jesse laughs and asks where they plan to hide him. Vance says he plans to have Boss help.

Police Department

Boss is going over his plan of disbursing the phony gas pumps to Rosco and Enos, being careful about what he says due to Enos’ honesty. He says he points out a number of gas stations. The Dukes all come in and the three rush over to check on Jesse. Boss admits they were on the way to the farm soon and Jesse assures them it isn’t the end of the world. Boss says if there is anything in the world Jesse wants to name it. Vance says they want the police to protect Jesse from the crooks. Boss asks from what and Daisy explains about the crooks. Boss suggests the jail and the Dukes suggest Boss’ home. Boss wonders for a moment and Daisy reminds Boss about times where he stayed with them while he was in trouble. Rosco and Enos both say they remember that and Boss agrees to let Jesse stay with him as he remembers as well. Boss says Lulu is currently in Decatur visiting her sister Hortense. He tells Jesse he can use Lulu’s bedroom as it has it’s own kitchen and walk in refrigerator.

Road

Rick and Parker head toward the Duke Farm with guns.

Hogg Family Home

Boss and Rosco help the kids and Jesse into the house. Boss takes Jesse into the dinning room, offering him Boss’ favorite chair to sit in. Jesse and Boss sit down and Boss offers to make him something to eat after he tells him a funny joke. Rosco says it’s about Old Blue as it’s his favorite but Boss says that isn’t it. Vance, Daisy, and Coy watch from the living room, smiling. Daisy says it is nice of them to try and cheer up Uncle Jesse like they are. Coy says he still wants to find the guys who hurt him and suggests they go back to the farm and wait for them. Vance says that the phone call from Nashville is bothering him and he wants to know about it. Coy asks if he thinks the reporter wasn’t really a reporter.

Vance asks Boss if he can use his phone and while Boss is unsure, Vance says its about Jesse’s medication to which Boss immediately tells him to go right ahead. Rosco then starts talking about Old Blue. Vance talks to Gussie, who says no calls came from Nashville but one did come from Capitol City. Coy says they were looking for Jesse and Vance says they will be. They ask Daisy to stay but she refuses.

Vance tells the others that they are headed back to the farm to do some chores. Boss tells them not to take too long.

Duke Farm

Coy and Vance set up a net on the porch. Inside Daisy makes a decoy of Uncle Jesse. The two arrive at the farm, getting spotted by Daisy, Vance, and Coy. They put on their masks and move up toward the door. Daisy sits in the living room, reading to the fake Jesse. The men get ready to charge in, but Enos arrives and they flee. Enos goes charging in, saying Rosco sent him to help them but Enos gets caught in the trap. Vance, Coy, and Daisy push past him to chase after the three men. Enos yells for them to wait as he tries to get the net off before joining the chase.

Road

Coy drives as they follow the car with the crooks, Enos chasing after them. Parker begins shooting at the General and Daisy ducks. Enos tells them over the CB that they have no right to be taking the law in their land but the Dukes refuse. Coy decides to go around and cut them off up the road, not knowing that there is a traffic buildup outside the Mobile Home Park. Parker and Rick get through but Coy is forced to jump over a moving truck. They lose a tire in the process and lose the crooks. Meanwhile Enos goes through the trailer. He stops by the General and Daisy asks if he’s alright. Enos offers to go after the crooks and see if he can do anything. Meanwhile the Dukes fix the tire.

Duke Farm

Rick and Parker go back to the farm, to find ‘Jesse’ was a doll. Parker says they will search every inch of Hazzard until they find Jesse and kill him.

Hogg Family Home

Boss and Rosco pace while Jesse grabs an apple. Boss tells Rosco that they need to be at Miller’s Crossroads in 45 minutes. Rosco offers for him to stay with Jesse while Boss goes but Boss says he doesn’t trust Hanson. Rosco says he will go and Boss can stay but Boss says that won’t work cause he doesn’t trust Rosco to do anything alone. Boss is upset because they can’t just leave Jesse but he’s about to lose ten thousand dollars. Jesse hears the conversation as he starts eating an apple.

Town of Hazzard

Rick and Parker drive around town in a brown stolen car, looking for the General Lee. Vance, Coy, and Daisy park in an alleyway and Parker spots them. The two pull over and watch the three Dukes walk over to Boss’ house. Parker figures out that is where Jesse is, but Rick points out the patrol car. Parker says they will wait.

Hogg Family Home

The three kids explain to Jesse about what happened. Jesse says the important thing is they are alright. Boss and Rosco come over and Boss says for the Dukes to all relax and stay there as they have some business to do. They attempt to leave but Enos calls in, informing them that he found the crooks car at Walton’s Willows. They all conclude the crooks swapped cars and Vance says they are leaving. Boss protests but the three are gone. Boss and Rosco become upset as they have nine minutes and Jesse tries to calm them.

Outside the Dukes get into the General and drive away with Rick and Parker watching. Inside Boss tells Jesse that he has to be somewhere in seven minutes or he will lose ten thousand dollars. Jesse says he will be fine on his own and Boss and Rosco leave, but Boss does move the CB so it is directly into Jesse’s hands and tells him that if he needs anything to call.

Parker and Rick watch Boss and Rosco leave and realize this is their chance. Parker gets excited and tells Rick to get the car as he is going inside. Jesse is sitting at the table and hears the door open. He asks if it’s Coy and Vance. Getting no answer from Parker, he asks about J.D. and Rosco before concluding it’s one of the crooks, the one he saw. Jesse grabs the CB mike, turning it on to broadcast. Rick comes in and Jesse flips the table on them before calling for the kids on the CB.

Road

The kids hear and turn around, and Boss and Rosco hear and Boss tells Rosco to go back. Rosco asks about the money and Boss says never mind the money and to go back. Rosco is surprised but obeys. Enos also hears and rushes to help.

Rick and Parker take Jesse out to the car. As they do, Boss and Rosco arrive. They rush out of town with the officer following. They nearly hit a truck going out of town, running Rosco into a fire hydrant that causes the car to get stuck. Rosco gets them unstuck and Boss stops him to call the Dukes over the CB and inform them what happened. Vance says they know Boss didn’t mean harm and asks what way they went. Boss says they didn’t see what way but he describes the car. Vance gives everyone directions and they split up.

Cave

Jesse listens as they drive, recognizing the sounds of a bridge, a train, a construction site, and finally a dirt road. They stop at their hideout, pulling Jesse out. Rick asks that Parker is going to kill Jesse in the cave, clearly upset by what is about to happen but Parker says outside is just fine. Parker tells Jesse to say his last words and Rick looks away, unable to watch. Jesse knocks the gun away before fleeing into the cave. The men give chase on foot.

Road

Daisy starts praying for Jesse’s safety as Vance drives.

Cave

The two come out of the cave and decide to spread out to look for Jesse. Jesse exits the cave from where he was hiding. As Rick and Parker look in the vegetation, Jesse finds their car and gets inside before learning it didn’t have a radio. Frustrated he gets out again and opens the hood. He starts pulling out wires to keep them from leaving. Hearing the men return, Jesse moves away.

Road

Enos, Boss and Rosco, and the Dukes all take different roads looking for Jesse.

Cave

Rick and Parker return to find Jesse demolished the car. Parker gets frustrated and Rick says that is enough and to just forget about Jesse. Parker reluctantly agrees, saying a blind man on his own in the woods wouldn’t have much of a chance.

Jesse wonders in the woods, finding a large stick and breaking it off to use as a seeing stick. Meanwhile the Duke kids continue to look, Daisy getting more frantic as time goes by. Jesse meanwhile finds a pit of quicksand and moves around it. Vance heads to Devil’s Ridge while Jesse tossed a rock to find a cliff in front of him and turns another way. Jesse finds a clearing as the kids get to Devil’s Ridge. He lights a fire and sits back, hoping someone friendly will see it. On the Ridge Daisy spots smoke and Vance says it’s from Eagle Rock Valley.

Rick and Parker continue to work on the car while the Duke kids head out toward Jesse. Vance calls the others and tells them about the smoke. Everyone rushes that way and arrive at the same time, finding Jesse. They all happily reunite and Daisy says she is taking them home. Jesse tells them they need to catch the crooks first and he will lead them to them. Rosco asks how since he can’t see. He tells them about how he disabled the car and tells them that the cave the crooks are at is across the Sweetwater Bridge, past the 4:45 train on the railroad crossing and by some roadwork. They say that roadwork was on Meadow Lane Road and that would lead to the cave on Simon’s Peak. Daisy protests that Jesse needs rest but Jesse says after. Vance, Coy, and Enos put out the fire as everyone gets into the cars and leaves.

Cave

Rick gets the car running and they prepare to leave. Rick spots all the cars coming after them and they flee. The General is in the lead in the chase with Boss and Rosco behind them and Enos in the rear. Jesse laments not doing a better job on the engine since they got it together too fast. The four cars continue down the road and Coy tells them that he is taking another route. Rick and Parker try to figure out where the Dukes went, but they are stunned when the car jumps over them instead. The crooks are forced to stop and attempt to flee on foot. Vance and Coy catch them and knock them out. Furious, Vance tells Parker to get up as he’s not done yet but Rosco and Enos arrest them, saying they know they don’t deserve to get let off so easily. Everyone checks on Jesse.

Balladeer: Well, them fellas got plenty of pokey time for robbery, kidnapping, and attempted murder. Boss suddenly remembered that he lost $10,000 plus them crooked gas pumps. But you know something? For once in Boss’ life, he didn’t care about it. Now that he knew that Jesse was safe again. And as for Jesse’s eyes, well it’s hard to say. After a few days rest and proper medication the bandages were coming off. And everybody was praying for the best. Well I just can’t think of a better way for things to get back to normal in Hazzard.

Duke Farm

The Doctor takes the bandages off Jesse's’ eyes while the Dukes, Boss, Rosco, and Enos wait to see what happens.  Jesse reveals he can see and they all happily celebrate.
